i'm installing a set of cams in my 98 sunfire GT i was wondering what kind of tuning needs to be done and what kind of places are best to go to get it done right. i've heard it's best to have your car tuned after installing cams?
As far as tuning, people usually mean checking to see how much fuel you really need. Your computer may make your run rich or lean so you may need to adjust the fuel amount you need.
The best places you can go to are places that have a dyno. There you can get your car dyno tuned because they can check your Air/Fuel Ratio and run it on the dyno to adjust it (hence dyno tuning).
Now you need a device to actually adjust your fuel. You can use a Fuel Pressure Regulator, SAFC-2, Greddy E-manage or a standalone (I don't think you need that just yet...).
I personally have an SAFC-2, best thing for me. I was running VERY rich and with that I tuned my fuel down and I got my power back. I was running rich after my cams were installed, I especially needed to get it fixed because I was putting on a P & P head which means more airflow and I needed to see if I needed more fuel or less fuel.
From personal experience, I can tell you that our computers tend to run rich but it really all depends on what you do and on what car you. Each car is different.
So yes, tuning is the best thing you can do after installing your cams and probably the best thing you do from now on after you add another part to your vehicle.
Good luck to you.

Just to correct myself...tuning can mean to check your fuel consumption and to adjust your ignition timing. Your ignition timing will more than likely fine after the cam install so your biggest thing to check is your fuel.
