To make the pulley light weight, that means eliminating the damper on the pulley, correct? But if I'm not mistaking, isn't it there for a reason? What does the damper do? Just something I thought of and would like some input on. Thanks.

There are two different versions of an "underdrive" pulley for our cars. One of them, like RK Sports, is lighter than stock and the exterior diameter is 2" shorter than stock so you have to purchase a different belt. It is less rotating mass so your motor cranks over easier, less strain and your motor will rev up much faster. It has drawbacks though, such as the fact that your accessories such as alternator, water pump, etc will not be spinning as fast and some people are known to have charging problems. If you wanted an underdrive pulley, I'd recommend RSM's crank pulley. It is lightweight, but STOCK SIZE, which is your best option.

Stock size is what I would go with. But I'm just concerned about dropping the damper? How will it affect the car? Thanks.

I've covered it already above. It's not "harder" on the engine really. Just keep an eye on how your car does with it, and if it doesn't like it, put the stock one back on and sell the pulley. Some cars like it, some don't.

i think he's refering to "crank walk" with the dampener removed its like taking a wheel weight of a balanced tire.
i've heard some people had some problems with that after they installed the crank pullies.... and i've heard from others that its all good.
listening..... b/c i'm interested for one as well.
How would it respond if it "didn't like it?" I guess that's always an option if it doesn't work out just to sell it afterwards. It would run the same and rev quicker if it was playing nicely, and if it didn't do that, then I'd want to take it off. Do I have that concept right? Thanks again.

Only 2nd gen DSM 4G63s get crank walk lol
and if it didn't like it, the motor wouldn't run right, seem off balance, and your accessories wouldn't charge worth a damn.

Any others with they light weight pulley have +/- feedback on them? By the way, my car has the Ecotec motor('05') If I buy it then sell it, I'm going to lose a few $$$, so I'd like to avoid that by doing my homework first. Thanks.

just search around and you'll get the general feedback of most people. there are 2 more underdrive pulleys on this page alone that i can spot.

i believe so. some use a smaller crank pulley / larger alt pulley combo but i believe RSM's are both stock size.

I'm running the Unortho/AEM pulleys combo on my auto. Factrory belt.
And I get the charging at idle problems n such.
Still may have to try the lighter factory crank just to see.

I would have to say more people go with a true underdrive pulley, than just a stock leight one. Crank walk on our cars is not a issue (that is a DSM issue). We have balanced shafts (on 2.4's and 2.2 Ecotec's). I have ran a underdrive pulley on3 of my own 2.4's with no bad affects. All motors had many miles put on them. Also I have never ran a ALt pulley, never had charging issues (and I have had subs). I also notice my A/C works better and colder with a underdrive pulley as well.
I will say yes I have had sub's but not some hugh unreal system, but 2 12's witih good power, and no problems, and now a bass cannon.

pullies add very small amount of vibes, way less than motor mounts. the damper pulley isnt reall necessary on our cars since we have balance shafts. if you were to do the 2.3 oil pump conversion to get rid of the shafts id keep the damper pulley. other than that i wouldnt worry about it.

if you get vibes from pulleys, then something is wrong.... mainly off balance.
FYI... I just removed my ebay underdrive pully, The bearing in the AC compressor went out because of it, and I was having charging problems, to the point that I was running rich under heavy throttle because the coils werent getting enough juice, sure its slower revving up, but, I think it is better without it. Plus I am about to do a stereo install and need my amps/volts back.
What would be a suggestions for a light weight pulley? def want to keep stock size..... Thanks!

i love my RKsport 2.2OHV crank pulley, just never let the battery die when having a smaller crank pulley
[the battery died becuase of my own stupid fault and NOT the crank pullies] other then that my car loves it, and i dont have any problems with my water pump, my stereo system, etc.

I use the unorthodox/AEM combo on my 2.4L and have had no problems at all mainly abuse causes problems or bad installs especially if your getting vibrations and such from your pullies..... I`m sorry I just dont see how a pulley wears out the AC compressor....

The crank walk everyone is referring to has nothing to do with an unbalanced crankshaft on the DSMs. The flaw was related to the oil squirters in the head of the 2ed gen 4G63t.
Removing the excess rotational mass on the pulley on some cars has been thought to cause problems though on some engines because the pulley doubles for a harmonic balancer and a pulley. This has been an ongoing argument for many years now on to go with an under driven pulley or to stay stock. Weigh your options and make your own decision. That's the best way you're going to come to a conclusion.

I do not see the car running rich, becuase of lack of amps. I could see the coils not putting out enough spark ( which if all the fuel does not burn could make it rich). Also how do you know it was rich? How do you know it was not just right. Without air/fuel readings you do not know.
