Ram air?

On the 2.4, the TB is right in front....

How well would a ram air set up work that has the intake pulling air right from the front of the car?

Also, would a scoop (WRX style for their intercooler) to cool the engine bay and header, help, or hurt performance?

I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.

If you built the ram air settup good it would work just as good as any other ram air. BUt most of the air comming to your engine come from underneath your car. (lower bumber)
not from dirrectly in front. So you would want the air filter low.
A WRX style scoop would help cool down your engine but IMO the whipping wind might hurt performance.

As far as the scoop goes, would a simple heat extractor work better than a scoop?

And I was going to mount the filter on the hood, above the TB, to keep the intake tubing short.

Running it under the car makes for a longer tube.

Now as far as cold air goes.....

Heat rises, we all know this.

So with the filter under the car, the air would be warmed from the asphalt.

With the filter on the hood, the air would be warmed from the warm hood.

So which is better?

with ram air setups, it really truly boils down to which hood style do you think is prettier...

personally cowl hoods will do more than ram air, as it will vent heat at speeds and actually suck the car nose front down a bit...

ram air....well realistically at the speeds these cars are limited to, there is no ram air... just the look.... kinda like dual exit exhaust, its not really dual exhaust.

Ahh nice to see you dropping some info here, I've seen a lot of your posts and you seem to know your stuff..

Now my "ram air" set up, isn't quite ram air. Well, the planned set up anyways.

What I would be doing, is esentially mounting the filter on the hood, above the TB (2.4L)

The filter would be in front, on the sloped part of the hood.

The set up would basically be similar to ram air, but like many have said ram air really only works at like 100mph+

My whole concept behind this idea is to have the shortest intake tubing possible, and get the coldest air possible.

Here's a picture:

not a bad idea at all....

its similar to a setup used on a turbo cavalier from a bash or two ago....

cant remember, but i believe it was gunmetal or yellow (moreso gunmetal) and one of the cars thats at the top on the banner....

thats the underside of the hood but notice the hole in the back....

now on the filter part.....and the hood

i believe its the "technic cavalier"

good concept but make sure if you do mount it upfront like that, account for rain and water possibly getting taken in....

not sure where you live, but its a good chance it rains at some points and time unless a really arrid area.

at speed, highway or decent roadways, a downpour of water can go into the filter and directly into the TB.... just make sure the box, or whatever you build on the front of the hood, has a way to kinda minimize water intake if you experience a downpour.

also and make sure you have something to protect the filter....

2 things... filters get dirtier quicker when in the direct open element.... just think about how dirty you car gets from week to week....

and also remember, arseholes, love to f with others cars.... so make sure the filter isnt REALLY easily accessible and g'luck with it...
