Will a regular 2.2L from a 2002 sunfire work in a 1996 cavalier without any major changes? If there are changes, what do I need to change? Can I use the cavalier's transmission and ECU?
If your sunfire has the 2200, then yes. The motor and tranny drop in, you will need to change the PCM also. If it's the 2.2 Ecotec, it's more trouble than it's worth honestly. Swap in an LD9.

You can pretty much swap any 3rd gen motor in your car, you just need the neccesary parts. In your case, like Spotabee said, you need the ECU. Also, is the motor coming from the same transmission (both autos or both manuals)? If they are different then you need to take the tranny also from that motor your getting.

I have a automatic, not sure what the other motor is from. Will the wiring harness from the 96 work on that motor? And if I can get the wiring harness with the motor of the 2002, will it plug into the 96 car harness?

I would say take the car harness from the 2002 and find out what tranny it has.

you can even match a 60v6 on your tranny and swap it in the car for under 2000$ since you have an automatic
if you are switching between 96-99 and 00+ motors than I would personally swap the entire wiring harness. The PCM is a given, but I would do the harness just to be safe.

the 2.2 from 2002 is a 2.2 2200 NOT a 2.2ECO unless it was towards the end of the year when they stoped the z24 and brought in the LS Sports with the 2.2ECO's
now the quest is, is it a DOHC engine or a OHV engine?
if its a OHV all you'll need is the ecu from the car and swap it in, and is your 96 a 3spd/4spd auto or a 5spd manual? [other wise if you just keeping the tranny the same, make sure you get the correct ecu and just pop that 2002 2.2ohv 2200 in and your set to go]
if are planing on swaping out a 3spd for a 4spd auto make sure you get the harrness & interior 4spd shifter. (i belive that the 3spd & 4spd auto engine harness's are different?)
if you are swaping in a 5spd into a auto car, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE UPPER TRANNY MOUNT FROM THE CAR!!! (cut it off the frame and have it rewelded back on!) [yes the auto & manual tranny have DIFFERENT mounting points!]
now if its a 2.2ECO engine that you wanting to swap into your ride, you'll have to have the upper engine mount welded in [you can get this from any 03+ wrecked J] but its more of a head ache then what its worth, i would recomend just swaping in a 2.4L if you can get your hands on one.
the reason for good sticky tires!

My tranny is a 3 speed. I'm glad to now that I need to get the wiring harness. The motor I found is on E-bay and I don't think it has the wiring harness. If I use my tranny do you think I use my wiring harness because I know that a 98+ 2.2 ohv has a improved head design but not sure if they added any extra plugs or not.
