(opinion) best 2.2 turbo kit for me?
Monday, July 18, 2005 6:44 PM
First off I have searched. lol

Who makes the best 2.2L turbo for me. I have a 97 cav w/ 74k miles and an auto trans. I want reliable power and have no problem w/ a little fabrication. I have looked at cav connection and Hahn so far.

Are there other options? Which would you recommend for me?

Any info on that? Last time I priced real internals for the car they were more expensive than an LS1 crate engine.

I want to turbo what I have for now. Then work on a new engine.

I paid about $1000 for internals

but why not build your own kit?

its much more rewarding

To tell you the truth, I'm lazy. I work 55 hours a week and live in an apartment where working on my car is frowned upon. I am sure I could install a turbo at my friends house.

Building your own kit can be very risky at times. You pretty much either have to have alot of car knowledge or a good amount of money for a shop to tune it for you. My point is...it's just not that easy...

Building your own kit is a great idea if you are knowledgable and have the proper resources. Then again, if you aren't knowledgable and don't have good resources, boosting a j body is not the best idea. As far as turbo kits, Hahn's kit IS out for the LN2 motors.

So... lol. I would like a turbo kit for my car. It's a 97 2.2 auto. Which kits are options? I'm leaning toward cavconnection stage3. Are there any others I should be considering?

don't do stage 3 unless your bottom end is built and you have ideas for heavy fuel system modification. i.e. pump / injectors / eic

sorry,

I just am of the opinion that if you do not have car knowledge you shouldn't be messing with things like forced induction.

I think cav connection makes a great kit, but if you can, splurge for the intercooler setup too.

I just ordered a kit from Cavalier Connection, and i'm telling you they are great people to deal with, I haven't gotten the kit yet, so i can't really say anything about it yet, but just to let you know, they are a great company, and i whole heartedly support them, absolutly great service! I'm sure the kits will be great too, they seem to be very dedicated in making sure that they've got it right, and keeping there good name. Just my $.02

As a tip, Cavalier Connection is now J Tuners at http://www.jtuners.com. And their turbo kits are fabulous!

I've found that a stg 3 in their eyes seem to only be adding on an intercooler and injectors, possibly other small knic knac things! I don't see a reason as to why he couldn't purchase that kit, that's if he keeps the boost down!

I only say this because when sites have kits for other cars and they offer different stages, its usually a bigger, ported, and/or ball bearing turbo or other upgraded accesories to run crazy amounts of boost! And in that case I would also suggest you have a built bottom in, forged internals, etc...but not when it comes to a Cavy connec kit!

If anything in that post is some how wrong blame the lack of sleep in the last 4days!

a "stage 3" kit is designed for people who want to run more boost. adding an intercooler might be something i would consider to be more on a "stage 2" level but whatever they want to do, it's their marketing. personally i think intercooling is vital to any successful productive turbo setup. but they key to more boost is more fuel, and provided more fuel can be provided, more boost can be supplied, with good tuning. given that all LN2 forged pistons must be custom made, no wonder they don't offer that in any sort of package deal along with forged rods. i think that forged internals SHOULD be an option for say a "stage 4" kit for anything over 6 to 8 psi. but like i said, it's their company, their decision.

So a stage 3 jtuners kit will work for me. will it be safe to run low boost (3-4psi) daily?

What options do I have for fuel upgrades? I assume new in tank pump (or inline) pump and larger injectors.

I'll go search and get back here. lol

you're better off being tuned for 8 to 10 and running 5 or 6 daily. running that low, you're prone to running excessively rich and you lose about 2 psi through your intercooler anyways.

Okay,

I can see 5 0r 6 psi daily. Now what are my options for fuel upgrades. What lbs/hr rating do I need? And for fuel pumps?

My search for 2.2l injectors basically turned up only people modifying their manifolds to accept top feed injectors.

Also looking into a wideband

e-manage..........40lb injectors............in-line fuel pump........tune it to hell with a wideband

Quote:

If you can tune it well, i/c isn't vital. Lotsa, lotsa turbo cars were built non i/c. But it it's a helluva lot easier to tune, and it's a helluva lot better for consistent power.

Quote:

Yes, providing the tune is good. I'm running 7 psi daily, non intercooled, stock bottom end. This engine has been turbocharged since 5 / 04 and has 10s of thousands of miles on it.

And now you've found the heart of the problem for the 92-97 2.2 OHV engines. There's no drop in injectors that don't require substantial additional work. There are other routes that people have followed, but there's only two reasonable options come to mind: AIC and top feed conversion. The AIC is probably the least amount of work. But if you're new to turbos, do yourself a favor and read, read, read before bolting on the parts that you've bought. Because of the fueling, the 2.2 requires a little more thought than other engines.

You could probably run around 10 psi on stock internals with a good tune. There is a local guy that had a 97 2.2 running 10psi putting down 200hp. He ran the piss out of the car and never had a problem with the stock bottem end.

275hp & 306tq - 1999 2.2 ohv

now that is encouraging

although I am not going to risk it, the built engine goes in with the boost.

im surprised nobody mentioned the jbp turbo kit... looks like a good option that covers all areas for fuel delivery and management. comes with everything too.

The 2.2 that put down 200hp with the stock bottem end also had a nice size front mount.
