building a performance NA 2.4 engine
Saturday, July 16, 2005 10:09 AM
hey i called up the local junk yard and the guy said he hasa few low milage 2.4 engines that he would sell for 250 bucks so i think im going to build up a 2.4 liter with the works like port and polishing and bore'n the cylinders and putting performance pistons and the works in it. I wanna keep it NA and so far i have a 2.3 HO intake/tb and secret cams to put on the new engine if get it. Got any tips on what to get or any tips from anyone whos done something similar to this? thanks

If I were you I would also delete the balance shafts and do the 2.3 oil pump swap. Be sure to change the water pump while your in there. Get clevite 77 bearings, prolly eagle rods, J/E pistons, and ARP head studs and main bolts. Might look into one of those cometic gaskets, Not sure if there out yet or just for boost or what, but might as well do the good stuff. If you plan on staying N/A forever you can bump compression up quite a bit. Also, I would consider having the H.O. T/b ported to like 62mm and have the mani and head port matched and ported and polished. You can get 1mm oversized valves from karo @carcustoms. You could also consider doing the 2.3/2.4 hybrid stroker, but that all depends on how crazy your planning to go. Also, if your gonna really go crazy I would recomend something lumpier than the hybrid cams, such as the JBP stage 2 cams.

Just some ideas.

Where can I get all of what you listed above?

A friend of mine has a lot of money saved and wants me to build him an engine. I can do all the work myself.

I think he would go for the stroker, so what all would I need.
Thanks

well if your interested in the stroker i reallyyy suggest letting someone else do it,its not that simple first youll need a 2.3 core engine, and youll have to fit a 2.4 crank and rods in it...so alittle block work will need to be done to the journals and all. youll need to talk to JOSH at www.the-race-shop.com hell really hook you up..thats whos doing mine.

I've got a small machine shop so I could do all the work it just depends on price. If its gonna be way cheaper to build it myself, it will be worth the work.

ok..to be COMPLETLEY honest with you i would AT LEAST let him do the block work....unless you know how to retrofit a 2.4 crank in a 2.3 block and make sure you have all the right clearances..not to mention the crank position sensor has to be modified and such....
...other than that youll need 2.4 rods with 2.3 custom pistons to fit whatever size you have it overbored to( and i suggest total seal rings ) find you a good 086 head to go on top and a good set of HO or w41 cams( depending on how much you really wanna spend and how much power you want) and im sure you familiar with all the head work that can be done....but the block is gonna be tricky, but if you feel comfortable honeing the journals and modifing the ring for the sensor ) www.quad4forums.com is your friend....im not sure what ALL has to be done to make the block and crank work so you might want to read the allll the sticky about it on the quad forums and you might be able to do it yourself ....hope that helps

How much is he building your engine for?

and im used to BMW prices so those cams at $400 are sooooo cheap.
I kinda hijacked this thread, so email me from now on.

actually josh got me a set of w41 cams for 350 so maybe thats cheaper for ya ....but as a price for ya( and this is including the PnP and all the head work, valves, retainers and such) its running about 3500 for all of it...but keep in mind im giving him my OLD endine to eliminate core prices
