Some people on this forum think that the IAT sensor is used to measure temp and the amount of air going into the intake. It only measures temp not air flow.
There is a air flow sensor on the TB.
The IAT is a thermistor (a resistor which changes value based on the temp of air entering the engine).Low temp produces a high resistance (100,000 ohms at -40 deg.C/-40deg.F) while high temp causes low resistance(70ohms at 130degC/266degF ).The pcm supplies a 5 volt signal to the IAT sensor through a resistor in the pcm and monitors the terminal voltage. The voltage will be high when the intake air is hot.By measuring the voltage, the pcm Knows the intake air temp. This input is used in starting and running fuel control calculations.
So I think on a stock 2.4,2.2 or 2.2eco if you put the right resistor in place of the sensor and put a bigger Air intake (cold air kit or short ram)system that you can see some better throttle response quicker revs. I dont Know about any power or tourqe gain,
its is
...just like relocating it..just dumps more fuel thats all
NO IT did not come out of the ebay ad It came straight from ALL DATA a ASE certified data base. You have know idea what your talking about. I work on cars all day every day for 3 years now and i get paid to do what you do for fun.
Machzel08 wrote:its is ...just like relocating it..just dumps more fuel thats all
if you put in more air and fuel it will make a difference.
and how will you be getting more air in there? cause otherwise you'll just get carbon deposits.
and in the first place you asked us if it was real of fake so what makes youy think you know the solution?
Shifted wrote:You copy that out of an ebay ad?
More fuel does not mean more power, peak power is made on the edge of lean.
Yup he's right. But you have to be carefull when tuning to be on that top edge of lean. My friend has a 97 Supra with one of 3 JUN 3.2L stroker motors, 84mm dual ball bearing turbo, etc etc 1200 hp car. He ran a lil too lean, and at 42 psi and timing advances 19 degrees... it finally went kaboom

its crap, always have been always will be.... nuff said.
also, from the other post....
Dam-it Muffins (Event) wrote:J R wrote:On a 04 eco the IAT IS NOT USED TO SEE HOW MUCH AIR IS COMING IN.There is a IAT and a Air flow meter sensor I dont KNOW about a 2.4 I will make a thread about it
no need to
the IAT does one thing.....
measures INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE.....
2,4 and 2200 have map sensors MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE sensors. the ecotec has the same as well.
also i believe they are all the same part number
Description: MAP SENSOR 98-03
Part #: 16212460
the manifold absolute pressure sensor determines when the pressure changes from vaccum (open tb vs closed where the IAC vavle allows air to pass.
IAT measures air temp and adds or decreases gas thrown in, in a nutshell.
the older 2.2 from 95-97 have a different style since it had the castle style intake manifold which was cast metal.
the 2.4, 2200, and ecotec all have the plastic manifold and all use the map sensors.
resistors are crap. doesnt tell the car what the actual temp going into the car is, so it doesnt adjust for fuel...
putting the iat sensor outside of the tube or in some rubber hose where its not in DIRECT AIRFLOW...... in a nutshell , you are DE-ENGINEERING your cars performance.
relocating it, puts it in the elements where it WILL get dirty
it will also not be reading air intake temp, which, since the name of it is "intake air temperature sensor" it would be common logic to install it in the intake path...
you wouldnt install your oil pressure sensor to your coolant overflow, or hook it up to an external air tank to get false psi readings...
any sensor on the car should be put where its supposed to go for the most accuracy.
if performance came as easy as relocating a few sensors, and adding BS ebay parts, everyone would be over 200 hp....
muffins, i feel like an idiot asking, but what should i do with my iat sensor? im boosted. should i try to put in in the piping, or just let it dangle somewhere? i could never really figure out what i should do.

Make sure it ends up in your charge piping AFTER the intercooler. Technically, you want your IAT just about as close to your throttle body as possible to get the most accurate reading. So just drill a hole near your TB, put in the rubber gromet, and place in your IAT sensor. You may have to extend the wire if it doesn't reach, it just depends on how you run your piping but you should be ok with the current length.

gm dealer world software is why many people are capable of being paid to do what we do for fun. cause the computer tells all. and most the techs i've met wouldnt have a clue with out it. my car never goes to the dealer any more and i was an employee of one for a while. thats why my car goes to a specialist. transmission bad it goes to the trans shop. and in closing congrats on being the holiest mechanic on the JBO. and black eco do you have any more tool chest? cause i'd like one as well.

I'd read the link (obdproject) under my sig before you call me uninformed and a "hobbiest". That is my company, I write software to hack into and reprogram the computers, I think I know a good amount about how they work and what the sensors do.

and as far as this comment i 100% agree dealership techs fix cars by what a computer tells them put most of those same people out in a driveway fixing a car and theyd be lost

good thing I dont work at a dealer. Dont matter the dealer couldn't afford me.

I agree that the computer does help alot.,But the problems that I use it for are far more difficult then your average day problem.I specialise in wrecked and flooded cars of all types.Jag,BMW,Audi,Ford,GM,Chrysler,Mercedes......................

So your a master mechanic like me?
Whats your education?
Because if you knew anything about a/f ratios, Temp sensors and the like, youd know that putting a resistor in your IAT sensor, just wastes fuel.
You do know that running rich is one of the easiest ways to kill an engine, right?
“Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that’s even remotely true."
No actually the reason it is sitting around is because nobody has a @!#$ clue how to fix it because working on transmissions is way to technical for any of the morons that are being classified as mechanics these days. Its the same way in the IT feild, I see people all the time who have X amount of certifications who just don't know @!#$. When something bad happens they don't have a clue how to troubleshoot or begin resolving the problem, so they either ignore it or try to look it up in a book, and then when someone figures it out, its "oh yeah I knew how to do that"
The first time my transmission I talked with the mechanic and he admitted to me that nobody at the dealership knew how to work on Getrags and it was the reason it took so long for them to get it back to me. They ended up having a specialist from GM come to help them put it together. Any real trans mechanic who has been in the field 20 years woudln't have a problem rebuilding one, but they arne't working at the dealerships because the dealerships are all about quick diagnosing and getting it back out the door. The guys who know what they are doing are working at specialty and performance shops.
So I guess anyone can be a mechanic these days if you know how to use a vacuum and suck mud out of a car.
Never had a bit of trouble with my other two manual trans vehicles, one Ive had over 6 years, must just be I dont' know how to drive the Cavalier.
J R wrote:BlackEco wrote:So what you work on cars and get payed for it, people like you are the reason I have been without my cavalier for 6+ weeks now and the reason within that time my transmission has been rebuilt 4 times and it still does not work. you are the reason that your car does not run you cant drive it. You think that they are having problems with your car I doubt it ! If it is under warranty they just put it on the back burner they dont pay full time for those jobs.Learn how to drive and then you can keep your car around for a while.
lol, i have the DMX thing in my head:
"Who shot JR, it wont be dallas."

Gees this post went a different direction .
Anyway yes the IAT sensor only measures the temp. of the air . That is it's only job .
The resistor is a pile of junk , it does nothing but trick the computer into thinking the air is colder and the PCM in return dumps more gas into the cylinder . But on the other end of the engine is the oxygen sensor which is going to tell the PCM that it needs to lean the engine out . When the engine is cold it will run very rich until the PCM see's the engine is up to temp. from the CLT sensor . From there it will cut back the injector pulse width .
Dumping more fuel into the engine is not always a good thing . The fuel that does not burn will wash the cylinders of the oil that is lubricating them . You wear your engine out quickier and wonder WHY did it wear out so much sooner .
I had a friend that wanted to get one of THOSE E-Bay chips . I told him it was a waste of time and money . What did he do .................. He bought one anyway . A couple of weeks later the car started acting funny and the gas mileage dropped . He removed the resistor and the car had better power without it , also he had his gas mileage back .
But hey it's your money and car , Do what you want .

all i will say is the following...
you wanna put a resistor in there to replace the sensor??? your gonna need a variable resisitor... and something that varies it for you.
OR
are you saying to add the resistor in there to up the resistance a bit...to allow more fuel in all the time?
