How Long at High Speeds
Monday, July 04, 2005 12:15 PM
Just out of curiosity, how long can our cars with a stock engine/intake/exhaust maintain 100mph+ speeds?

I know they hit the speed limiter at about 108 mph.

Granted it's speeding and not safe on public roads, but I'm asking out of curiosity if the engine can actually handle what the speedo says it can.

I have ran 2 different 2.4's at 100+ mph for 5-10 miles at a time, WOT.

I'd imagine if the engine is in good shape, it would last hours, if not days.
Probably wouldn't be too good for it though.

I agree.

Um... 107 miles an HOUR, if you went 130 miles, it took you at least 1 hour and 12 minutes... Obviously if you are going 107, you aren't going to travel more than 107 miles in an hour.

So what I'm gathering is that the engine can do it, and the engine wont blow up, etc etc...

Haha, never tried in my Cavy, but before this I had a 1997 Mercury Sable (with the weaker 3.0L V6) I set cruise control at about 105 and cruized for about 3 hours across the state (Florida, on a country road, saw maybe one car every hour)....by the time I got across the state I had one cylinder drop out and the car barely made it home....thats when we scrapped the car and got my cavalier. The engine had about 120k on it, so it was to be expected.

I had a 2002 cav 4dr and my job sent me to grand blank Michigan to work and it was a 64mile trip 1 way. and for the trips i had a CB and a radar detector so i would set the cruse a 105ish and roll. I did use Mobil1 in that car because i did not want to change the oil every month. I almost got busted 1 time but lucked out i did that for the first 16,000miles of that cars life. I did that from day1 with that car(2200) and i traded it in with 23,000 miles on it. it did have a slight lifter tick when you started it up but that was it. poor cav was a good car but to slow. and the lifter tick did not start until GM moved me closer to home (3.24 mile drive) i think the short trips was hard on it.

see ya!

actually shorter trips are harder on the engine. The engine doesnt have time to properly warm up, so it might only be 3.24 miles a day, but thats cold driving every time. I always kinda get the feeling that the 2.4L really was never allowed to be at its full potential. Today i drove 2 hours home from our lake house, i did a pretty constant 85-90MPH the whole time, and i drove up like that as well. Car still runs fine, no ticks or noises. I mean in my 4 spd Auto, at 90MPH id only be running about 3500 RPMS at most.

I'm in Germany and hit the autobahn running at 95 - 105 most times. Drove from Luxembourg back home (about 97 miles or so) at 105 with the cruise on this past Saturday. Never had a problem running the car at 100 or so for the last year that I've been here.

Funny thing is though you still get passed like you are sitting still every now and then. There are speed limits here (about 82 mph) in most places but goes unlimited in some spots.

So yeah, it can take it...or has so far

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

i was going to say the same thing

i think the car would run for days at 100+ (or at a given rpm), probably until it ran out of gas, and if you filled at back up while still going 100+ it would run for weeks

Re: How Long at High Speeds

maybe not weeks..but it would last awhile

If the motor is kept up (oil changes, filters, tuned up, ect ect ect...), I drove from Indiana to CA about 2.5 days of speeds between 80 - 100, and I never had a problem with it at all(2003 eco cavi, only mods at that time where Kustom direct air intake).

I still run the car at high speeds for long distances and it now has 50K+ miles on it(plus a few more mods for added HP).

Flame me if you want but am I the only one that thinks the people that have done this kind of thing on public roads are complete idiots? Not something I would willingly admit to if i had done it.

What kinda gas milage do you get when cruising at 100-105mph. I'm thinking maybe 18mpg, is that close??

This post was not about what you think about people driving 100+ on public roads. It was about how long we think the motor would hold up to that kind of speeds.

There are public roads where it is legal to do 100 plus....
I recently had the chance to do 130-135 for about 10minutes before slowing down for traffic....EGts stayed steady at about 14oo degress, and water temp was just under normal.
What is creepy at that speed is how loudly the tranny screams with Mark Pains tranny mounts.

I still got 315(on average) miles per tank at around 100 MPH, so that didn't hold true about the mpg dropping off at higher speeds.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought this was a public forum where people can voice their opinions? Thats what it's all about so just take it easy.

true it is, but there is rules about jacking post as well. He did not ask how you feel about people runing 100+ on roads did he? Why brig it it up.
