At the beginning of this fall, I will be starting my senior design class (Mechanical Engineering Degree). In this class I will be designing performance pulleys for the LD9 engine. C.S.U. will be helping with funding the prototypes for this project.
(Three sets each.)
I was wondering what your guys opinions on what you think / know would be the best pulleys for our cars. I personally like the Unorthodox pulley myself.
Which pulleys besides the crank and alternator pulleys would you guys like to be redesigned? (Example redesigned pulley for a/c / a/c bypass)
There are three types I need to make.
Stock
Redraw, calculate rotational forces, Drag on system, bla bla bla, and reproduce stock pulleys or use stock pulleys.
Stock Size
Lightweight material / Redesign all but bolt holes and outer track design.
Draw, calculation, and bla bla.
Free Design
Lightweight material / Redesign all aspects for best performance gains.
Examples: Lighting holes, Smaller / larger pulleys, different materials, safety factor of 2, can not drastically effect durability of engine, delete pulley, at
least 5-10hp Dyno proven gains., minimum limit of three pulleys for system.
All comments welcomed and appreciated.
Anyone want to donate their stock pulleys.

I would like to see replacement AC, ALT, and tensioner pulleys that are lightweight, but stock size.

Are you sure about that? My ex father inlaw removed the one off my ex wifes grand am with a 2.4 to replace the seal behind the pulley.

gm doesnt even rebuild the a/c compressors , they toss them and install new1's

ok but this has nothing to do with GM rebuilding ac compressor's.
So Aluminum will hold up on a crank pulley but not a ac pulley?
Also instead of installing a ac delete pulley, just delete the ac and delete pulley all together.
I just want ac on my daily driver, but my play car was made without ac anyways

I believe from a stress stand point it should hold up fine, as long as the hub diameter is big enough to take the repeated shock (fatigue failure mode) of the on/off of the clutch. You/I could also add fillets to reduce the stress concentration factor on the part.
There are a few aluminums that can take quite a bit of fatigue loading without failing.

I have a stock crank and alternator pulley sitting in my basement I`ll sell em to you cheap if you need them. I think the AEM/Unorthodox pulley is the best combo of pullies I love mine but alot of people seem to like the RSM combo too as it is stock sized.

Well it is a while off. I believe it does not get the official go ahead till the start of the fall semester. I have talked it over with my professors a couple times already.

But I rather get it for a cheap price, or pay shipping....just in case for some reason, C.S.U. does hold up to their end of the deal. They have screwed students over before.
Last month my friend made a intercooler for his WRX STI, and C.S.U. keep two of the prototypes (normally you get to keep everything from the projects.), and charged him half of the money back, because they said he charged C.S.U. to much money.

there is 2 different tensioner wheels , a metal 1 and a plastic 1
and i believe 2 different belt sizes also , to match the idler pulley differences

Really on a 2.4? I have owned, or still own 2 96 2.4's, a 97 2.4, and a 2001 2.4, all had, or have metal tensioner pulley, all use the same belt.

I know my 99 has a metal one and my friends 2002 has a metal one, but that does not mean the gm was not a retard and made a plastic and metal one.

and the 01 motor i put in my 97 has a plastic 1 , and a friends old 01 2.4 had a plastic 1
the metal 1 is smooth on the outside , and the plastic 1 has alot of ribs showing
and i remember there being 2 different belt sizes , from when i worked at chevy
Hum, never new that, about the different pulley's metal and plastic, I have only seen plastic. Are the sizes the same or are they different? Does anybody know for sure?

First i ever heard or seen on this. I wonder if it has something to do with where the cars came from?
