Hey guys, I just bought the short ram intake from cosmoracing.com for my 1998 non ecotech Cavalier. I was wondering if you know of a part number for a good K&N filter? I have been told the one it comes with sucks, which is why it was so cheap.
Also, if you have any price ranges, that would be cool. Thanks!
Ive used many different filters on my aem intake and havent noticed any changes in performance. Just go with a cheap cone filter from a parts store
Is this true guys? I was told to get a cheap intake and put a better filter on after.
Just remember the filter is there for a reason (to filter) which means it needs to be quality, thats why K&N is the prefered filter. You can buy cheaper filters, yes and the performance difference isn't going to be that noticeable, but how good of a job is it doing at keeping dust and @!#$ out of your engine? Thats why you go with K&N
Okay, any parts numbers I should know about? Also, how do you go about oiling the filters, as they do not come pre-oiled? What kind of oil do you use? I was told I would have to buy the K&N recharge pack for the filter.
My K&N filter (included in short ram kit) came pre-oiled in an air-tight plastic bag. The propaganda says it doesn't need to be 're-charged' for 50,000 miles, and that can be done up to 25 times. They say people have gone intervals of 100,000 without negative effects but that's not recommended.
just go to an auto parts store and start opening them up

So the intake has been installed, with the air filter that came with it, an it wasn't oiled. Is this going to be a problem? Also, with the K&N filter, they come pre-oiled, right? With the oil only having to be recharged every 50,000km or so? The car isn't used THAT much, '99 with only 60,000 on it.
So basically, is it going to be okay with the filter it came with, un-oiled for now?
And it also came with a bracket, a straight rail with an L bracket. Do I have to install this, as the intake is very tight in the hood, not moving much at all? And if it has to be installed, where would it be attached to?
Thanks in advance!
I went through a big hassle trying to get a K&N for my TO Boyz intake. I went to the site and got their phone #, then called and got measurements for several different filters. You are going to need to know the inlet diamater of the filter, and you have to make sure it fits in the engine bay.
Since you already have a filter that fits, measure that, call K&N give them the measurements so they can find you the best match then go to the store and order it. You will see that it comes pre oiled (I'm 99% sure that all K&N's do), and you won't have to worry about reoiling it until much later in life.

Painting the Z - one inch at a time!
most all guaze filters will do the job, doesnt have th be K&N, unless you want the name and stickers which you def pay extra for.
foam filters cant really be cleaned
paper degrades
guaze filters like clothing, can be cleaned and doesnt let small to medium size particles get lodged into it, like on foam filters.
any filter thats guaze will do the same job, just depends on what color, size, style you want.
K&N universal filters
Check here once you get the inlet diameter of your intake , and the length and other diameters you need . You can match it up to which ever one will fit your needs .
You should be able to go to any place that seels K7N filters and have them order the filter you need . Just give them K&N's part number listed on the left by each filter on the page .
