Lightened flywheel ?'s
Friday, June 24, 2005 10:41 AM
Okay I hava an ecotec/ 5speed. I'm looking to get a lightened flywheel. The one I want to get is a spec lightened flywheel that was 9 lbs. stock I think is 31 lbs. this is obviously going to make my car rev a lot faster. My question is does anyone no if this will create a problem with the stock tach not being able to keep up with the new revs?

Stock tach doesn't keep up with it anyway, you would see this on any other device like a scan tool or SAFC.

So basically if I get that flywheel I will have to get an aftermarket tach also right?

I asked this a while ago but I don't think anyone ever answered it... With lightened flywheels, does it make normal day driving harder? Someone said that it's really easy to stall the car if you have a lightened flywheel.

Well yes and no, it will take some getting used to but thats about it. it will die out quicker and will rev a lot quicker, You can get used to it within a few hours

I have this along with spec 3 clutch. It is alot easier to stall out because it grips extremely quick and you need to really get it down as its like learning manual all over again. As far as reving is conserned, its not super noticble. I though it would be really quick but it really only sped the revs up maybe 10% as far as getting to the redline.

since im spraying that could lead to a very big problem, if the tach is too slow and i hit the redline b4 the tach catchs up = BOOM

i have both of these in my 01 Z24 Cavalier (Spec Stage II Clutch and Spec 9 lbs Flywheel)...i can notice a difference, the rpms do raise faster and from what i can tell- i can drive normally not a problem and for me, it does not hit redline before the tach get theres if that is your worries..get the mods and you will notice a difference if you car. and yes, what i call it, your call will stumble at lower rpms cause of the flywheel..thats normal cus its so light you have to keep it spinning.

So overall would you say its worth it?

aftermarket tach with shift light and maybe shift a lil earlier and set a window switch for the nitrous that way you dont crash into the redline spraying have the nitrous cut off at like 6300

Flywheel is worth it. Plus i have been told really the best time to shift is soon after the Peak HP which is around 5600-5800 on most Cav's

I thought you wanted to keep going past the peak cause whenyou shift you spend more time outta the power band unless you are built for a low/mid powerband. But if youstay to the higher rpms, you shift, and are set at a higher rpm in that gear so it doesnt hurt your time where the power is really.

daily driving is more and more difficult the lighter and lighter the flywheel becomes. and your idle will be slightly off, as in not a steady RPM. but you'll DEFINITELY notice a difference.

Well I think I'm going to go ahead and pick that up and worst case scenario if i don't like it i'll just get my stock one cut anjd throw it back on, I'm not worried about the daily driving Ill adjust, and the tach will take care of the rpms..

No No No. I did some research into Flywheels and the last thing you want to do it lighten you stock flywheel. I heard it may not get done evenly it may weaken the flywheel. I have heard some horror stories about that. One such story was the flywheel messing up the tranny to the point it was almost out the tranny.
