Secret Cams swap within a week, advice?
Friday, June 24, 2005 8:00 AM
Swapping secret cams into my 2000 Z24 5 speed within a week or two, anybody have any advice I may have missed while combing the forums? Any common problems with this? I don't really plan to buy any of the suggested replacement parts, just take it apart, swap the cams, put it back together, is that a terrible idea? Are there any parts that are a 'must'?

Don't you have to swap the entire cam tower over (for the exaust anyways?) I thought the lifters were different size?

From what I have read and understand, the cams fit the tower without replacing, and I'm not touching the lifters. Although I read through every search result in about 20 minutes I would hope I would see a detail like that haha!

A lot of people don't know how to read, apparently.

The hybrid cam swap uses cams that fit in the stock towers with no modifications. I also reused my lifters (had to replace 2 that were cracked tho)...

What else.... the only thing I recommend is getting a new tensioner and guides.

Whatever you do... make sure somebody who knows how to time an engine installs them. It's not a small job, it's about 8 hours or so book time.

I SUGGEST you change your water pump while you're in there. Might as well it's ALL off an the pump is only held on by a few bolts.

Good luck.

I had major oil leak problems after my swap. It's more than likely 'cause I didn't change out those rubber gaskets. Trust me man, the gaskets total like $15-20, and if you don't replace them, you may have to spend the 8 hours redoing everything. Just replace every gasket you come across.

Oh, and don't try to take off the cover to the cams before you take off the cam gear. There are four bolts behind the cam gear that hold the cam tower (or whatever you call it) together. I don't know if anyone else tried, but I almost broke my tower doing that =P

I`m doing the swap soon as well, let me know how it goes I want to tear into the engine but I have to get it done fairly quickly as I dont have time to have the car apart for more than a day. I have some concerns with setting the timing correctly. If you get the chance take some pictures while you do it or at least let me know any problems or difficulties or even any tips would help too.
