intake and A/C?
Thursday, June 23, 2005 4:04 PM
hey i just installed a short ram intake i purchased off ebay and the filter hits a lil bit, is that a problem?? anyways after i installed i started driving it around and it sounds good with no check engine lights but i noticed something. My a/c dosent work!!!! it blows only hot air. i know there are those 2 wires that run over the intake but i just zipped tied those down ( i also zipped tied the clutch resevoir to a wire on the firewall. Are these 2 problems related? I put a cold air in a tiburon once but never even heard of a problem like this any suggestions????

more then likely not related.

those two wires are for the air intake temp sensor the car needs it believe it or not cause it doesn't know what the outside air temp is so it wont cut on the fan untill the computer sees the thermostate open and hot water enter the radiator. try hooking the sensor back up see if that doesn't help ( i know it did for me ) if not try unhooking the battery for about a minute if still no a.c. you may have another prob.

^^^Uhhhh no. reread your shop manual

the wires are proably for the IAT as mentioned above but its used by the computer to determine engine load based on air temp, manifold pressure and throttle position. (not the job of the coolant temp sensor as mentioned above) the pcm also controlls the ac. if the iat is unhooked the computer is unable to determine outside and wont turn the ac on. you may notice that in the winter if you fire up the ac the compressor wont turn on the cars smarter then we are. i am kinda suprised you dont have a CEL if this is unhooked. it sounds like you just tied some wires out of the way. so where did the IAT sensor end up?

i know it sounds wierd but my 04 did the exact same thing. for anyone who would like to try this little test just go outside start your car turn on the a.c. wait till its blowing good and cold pop your hood your fan should be running, now disconect the a.i.t. sensor what just happened to your fan? turned off huh? now step back in the car air not so cold anymore? o.k. now go hook the sensor back up. fan came right back on didn't it.
now your air is back to ice. what i guess i should have said earlier about when the engine heets up the temp sensor tells pcm hey i'm hot hows about turning on the fan pcm says ok turns on the fan so if your a.c. is on it will start to blow cold. and roscoes right i'm surprised no cel is on with the sensor gone. and shop manuals are a good
starting point but they cant fix everthing. i've had about 5 or 6 guys with 02 - 05 cavs
who have all had the same problem just hook the ait back up and your fine.

if you have the gm shop manual, its a good starting point and can fix pretty much all electrical probs unless you did something custom.

iat sensor should be inside the intake...

i fixed the A/c problem and everything seemed to be going great. then the next morning on my way to work the check engine light comes on so i assume its the IAT sensor loose and i check it and make sure its tight. It still wont go off and after warming the engine up when i rev the motor it holds at 1500 rpm for 5 seconds and then waits to drop down. Should i just accept my loss and put the stock intake back in? are there any other options? Thanx

def check for codes and btw try to get the filter so it doesnt hit anything my friend put an intake on his girls integra and the filter was just left to lay next to the battery well the other day when we went to install the header i noticed the filter had a hole rubbed right thru the metal housing. so i'd do whatever to make sure it dont hit anything.

I had my iat sensor conector go bad and the ac would not work and it threw a cel of the iat sensor input to high or something fixed it worked fine

megaman,

Uhhh..... yes!

disconect it and see how well your a.c. works. i got 10bucks that says it wont not untill
the temp sensor tells the pcm to cut on the fan.

either that or you have the only cavalier in the world thats built differently.
