secret cam swap question
Saturday, June 18, 2005 2:00 PM
i recently rebuilt my 2.4 and put in the secret cam's. i am just a little upset with myself about one thing. when i installed the cams, i didnt put new lifters in. i am hoping that i cna get away with it. i have heard of many people puting in the secret cams and not saying anything about puting new lifters. i know its a good idea to put new ones in when you do it but i really didnt think about it. but i am hoping that i can get away with it since i have never heard anyone say anything about changing the lifters a must do thing. i will probably just try it and watch for cam material in the oil and watch to make sure that it runs ok. i just really dont feel like doing it right now since the motor is stuffed in the car and bolted up. i would have to take the timing chain cover, timing chain, cam gears, and everything else... just something i dont feel like doing when its about 3 hours away from turning the key. any comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks again guys.

Most people don't change the lifters, they are freaking expensive. I think a set from gmpd is like $700 + shipping. The lifters really don't wear out, so I wouldn't be worried about it.

im liking what ur telling me, im just used to like older style v8's... u really have to watch when u swap cams and use old lifters because they get wear patterns embedded in them and then they will flatten the cams eventually. i think that the way that my 2.4 is setup with the over head type setup its not as big of a problem... i just have about 5000 dollars wrapped up in this motor and i dont want to hurt it in any way.... .thanks so much for the comment man... any others would be greatly appreciated.

basicly, the only problem 2.4 lifters have are either failing hydrolicly (wont hold oil pressure) or breaking apart from over-reving. These style lifters rotate in thier bores, so there isnt much of a wear pattern on them (look at the faces of them, looks like a spirograph)

Most of the wear is going to be on the cam itself, so as long as the cam looks good when you put it in, you should have no problems. (I didn't use new lifters on my swap, and cams look the same as the day I put them in.... some 20k miles plus)

if you're spending 5 grand on an engine...why not just replace the lifters anyway?

I mean if it saves you money than fine, thats cool.. but when building up an engine, to me it would make more sense to go with all new parts. But thats just my opinion. Good luck though dude.
