100 octane ?

will 100 octane help a stock ecotec? and does any one know the compression on an ecotec?

Re: 100 octane ?

IIRC the stock compression ratio on an Ecotec is 10:1 - anyone care to back me up?

stock compression is 10:1, any octane over 89 on an ecotec is just wasting money.

yes stock compression is 10:1 and and like said above the car manufacturer has the engine tuned to run best at 87 octane it states that in the owners manual

100 octane on a stock car might actually hurt your motor. Yes, it's 10:1

Higher octane gas, such as 100... is SUPPOSEDLY supposed to clean the engine a little. That what fueal-additives basically are, 104 octane with more cleaning additives.

But as everyone so far is saying, and as all these discussions have ended in the past... 87 is the way to go for a stocker.

only reasons you should run higher octane is if you have boost, nitrous, or higer compression

overkill.

i've found mine will run a little quicker with 89 octane over the 87, but no difference with 93.

i ran my car with basically racing gas when it was stock and it ran like crap... only reason i did this was my dad had this gas in his GNX and needed to get down to a 1/4 tank for the world of wheels car show so he put it in my tank... worst tank of gas ever... now if i had put it in my tank it would be nice as i am boosted.. but at the time i was bone stock ...

Your dad has a GNX !! I hate you !! such a great car. but onto the gas subject i have a major o.c.d. about what gas i put in my car and i only use premium. its probably a waste of money but i was brought up being tought that the cheap crap leaves sediments in your engine. It probably doesnt but that my take.

What does IIRC mean? I've been seeing this used a lot lately.

Octane does one thing: prevent detonation.

Like everyone else already said, anything over what the manufacurer specifies is useless if you're still running stock compression and have not majorly modifed the engine (converted a naturally aspirated engine to a force inducted one (nitrous, supercharger, turbo)

my car runs better and gets betteer gas mileage when i use 92-93 octane. i have used it since i got the car in october of last year and my car runs great.... i have a eco btw so its 10:1 comp ratio. my car does run better and i get better gas mileage on it.. thats why i use it... i may be crazy but its the truth i get way better mileage and the car just performs better....

Simply put......
Octane is the explosion point of the gas...... if you put higher octane then required you might actually hurt the motor and start some pinging ............ detonation........ etc......
Don't do it unless ur compression is different or your car is boosted... I use 94 in my car i'm running 6 PSI......

i thought octane was the gas's rating of it's resistance to knocking? as in too high of an octane and you'd have more hydrocarbons in your exhaust.

All I have been running is 100 octane. But my car is Boosting 12 psi has cams and a reflashed comp with two bar map/ So when I do dump 100 into it. It gives me extreme power gains. But like stated above , Its different with boost, and my computer now requires at least 93. I love the smell my car makes from it. It is like a hormone inducing perfume or something. lol. Stock car , don't waste your money. Last time I put 12.00 in I got about 2.5 gallons of it. I think it was around 4.50 something a gallon.

you won't detonate with higher octane.

Where the @!#$ did you get that information?

Here is from the Federal Trade Commission on Octane ratings:

THE FREAKING FTC wrote:
What are octane ratings?
Octane ratings measure a gasoline's ability to resist engine knock, a rattling or pinging sound that results from premature ignition of the compressed fuel-air mixture in one or more cylinders. Most gas stations offer three octane grades: regular (usually 87 octane), mid-grade (usually 89 octane) and premium (usually 92 or 93). The ratings must be posted on bright yellow stickers on each gasoline pump.

What's the right octane level for your car?
Check your owner's manual to determine the right octane level for your car. Regular octane is recommended for most cars. However, some cars with high compression engines, like sports cars and certain luxury cars, need mid-grade or premium gasoline to prevent knock.

How can you tell if you're using the right octane level? Listen to your car's engine. If it doesn't knock when you use the recommended octane, you're using the right grade of gasoline.

Will higher octane gasoline clean your engine better?
As a rule, high octane gasoline does not outperform regular octane in preventing engine deposits from forming, in removing them, or in cleaning your car's engine. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that all octane grades of all brands of gasoline contain engine cleaning detergent additives to protect against the build-up of harmful levels of engine deposits during the expected life of your car.

Should you ever switch to a higher octane gasoline?
A few car engines may knock or ping - even if you use the recommended octane. If this happens, try switching to the next highest octane grade. In many cases, switching to the mid-grade or premium-grade gasoline will eliminate the knock. If the knocking or pinging continues after one or two fill-ups, you may need a tune-up or some other repair. After that work is done, go back to the lowest octane grade at which your engine runs without knocking.

Is knocking harmful?
Occasional light knocking or pinging won't harm your engine, and doesn't indicate a need for higher octane. But don't ignore severe knocking. A heavy or persistent knock can lead to engine damage.

Is all "premium" or "regular" gasoline the same?
The octane rating of gasoline marked "premium" or "regular" is not consistent across the country. One state may require a minimum octane rating of 92 for all premium gasoline, while another may allow 90 octane to be called premium. To make sure you know what you're buying, check the octane rating on the yellow sticker on the gas pump instead of relying on the name "premium" or "regular."
