MSD DIS-II Mount Location
Thursday, June 09, 2005 12:41 PM
So, I've mounted and wired my MSD DIS-II right beside where the cruise control box should be... here's a pic:

I'm a little concerned about heat? Should I be? Once I get another strut brace (very soon) I'm thinking about mounting an aluminum plate to it, which would go over and under the DIS-II and then covering the plate with some 2000deg self-adhesive heat barriers... I really dont want to move the MSD but will if its necessary... whats everyone think?

Summer time in a street car.

I think it should be mounted in the cabin of the car. It's just too hot for it under the hood.

At least not back by the exhaust manifold, but shielding may be good enough.

Just my .02, but nice work though, it looks clean and well done.

thats where mine is, but my exhaust manifold is in a different place.

other places i have mounted mine is behind the battery, and a bracket that was off the driver side strut tower and along side the fuse box.

Mine is mounted to my strut brace right behind my master cylinder- about 2 inches to the left of the driverside strut tower...

Yeah... I still cant find anywhere that I like better than that... i think its pretty much time to move the battery... I think I'm going to get a header blanket (like wrap, but the heat can still escape to the bottom) and a piece of sheet metal and just f'ing leave it there... I spent a couple hours tonight and could never find a position on the driver's side strut bar that I was happy with.

Event + RedDevil, do you have pics of your various setups?

Mine is hard to explain without pictures.

It is upside down under a cover I made that goes over the pass side of the engine bay where the stock airbox used to be... on top of that plate is my filter for my turbo intake.

... yeah.

I'll get a pic one day.

I have my MSD sitting in the glove box. I had to extend all of the wires on the main harness......yea that was fun . You can kind of see the MSD in the glove box, and how I had to extend the wires.

hey what year is your car? and where you get that intake manifold? looks aftermerket and what that little k and n fiter you have there to the left of the manifold?
does the manifold help notice any gains

Thats an HO manifold, the small k&n is actually a breather filter... lets pressure in the crank case escape (Normally it flows into the intake before the TB)

Anyways, I ended up removing my AEM clutch fluid resevior bracket, and the MSD is mounted between the brake booster + driver's side strut tower... wont have any heat problems there, just a bit more tricky to mount and now I have to figure out how to mount the clutch fluid resevior.

Depends how you define worth, its not a very expensive mod (I spent about $250cdn on it, including gaskets, studs, various pieces of vacuum hose) but very labour intensive. It took me 4 or hours or so to actually bolt the thing on (I bought it from Lenko so it was already modified to fit the LD9) and then another 15 hours or so trying to get the same thing to run right... it's still idling high, but every week (I only put about 100km a week on the car) it idles a hundred RPMs lower.

I noticed a nice gain in the 3500-6000+ range with a stock TB... I really need to get off my ass and take my spare TB to the machine shop and get it bored out to 62mm.

Behind the battery, under the intake... perfect place for it

Ok, as promised here is a pic.

Look at the intake, then look under it... then lookunder that plate... that's where my MSD is. You wouldn't even know it's there if I didn' tell ya.

Here's a pic of what I have now... still gotta get a bracket to mount the clutch fluid resevior.

Here's why I cant mount the MSD under the intake, and I really dont like it there because it restricts access to the DIP switches.

Hey SunfighterGT, where'd you get the FPR... its the one on the fuel rail correct or is the disconnected polished aluminum piece in that pic? Also, you just drill and tap the fuel rail for the pressure gauge?

the AFPR is an FDP unit... I also have a Cartech FMU beside the fuel lines there... and yes the gauge was tapped right into the rail.

Remember, I'm turbocharged so I need the FMU.
