I'm about to start engine work on my 2005 cavy in Sept. Being new to this kind of thing I'm not sure what all is worth the trouble and whats not. So far I am looking at the following parts if anything isn't worth the trouble please let me know. If this is the wrong place sorry, just seemed to fit here.
Competition Intake & Exhaust Valves
Wiesco Forged Pistons 8.9:1CR Stock Bore
Eagle Forged H-Beam Connecting Rods
SPEC Billet Aluminum Flywheel
RKSport Single Cat Stainless Back System
B&M Short Throw Shifter
SPEC Stage III Clutch Kit (not sure what stage i should go with)
Patriot Ecotec 2.2L Stage II Heads Assembled with cams
Stage 3 Turbo Kit from www.cavalierextreme.com (havent decided on this kit yet might go with Hahn)
Anything you know i should or shouldnt get with this? Not sure what else to do not that i can do much if i get all this will put me back at 0 for the car for a few months. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i wouldnt go stage 3 clutch unless your running a drag car....the rest seems good though....if your car is even a weekend driver go stage 2...the stage 3 is more of an on and off clutch and is hard in traffic....
THE GUY SURE LOOKS LIKE PLANT FOOD TO ME!!!
if your gonna get a turbo then have a FULL exhaust custom made...dont get a rksport catback
you will need at least 2.5" piping ALL the way back..not just from the catalytic converter back...
the rksport might be 2 1/4' im not positive but i beleive that it is
top advice i can think of right now... when you do start buying parts.. shop around.
i;ve seen some people pay as much as 3700$ for shop work, and get less that has gone into my rebuild, parts wise and labor, and i only paid 2200$ for it.
shop around online and local. you never know what deals you can find
A big thing I've learned in my (very limited) experience while researching forced induction is that it is extremely important to upgrade your fuel system if you really want to do it right. high boost + stock fuel system = lean enough to bend or blow everything from the spark plugs down. Other than that it sounds like one hell of a build.
oh, and ditto the 2.5 pipe all the way out + high flow cat. Rksport's is 2.25. My uncle is a mechanic and he's building an f-body right now. He got a Ractive cat, dynoed it off the headers, welded the cat on and dynoed again- 3hp loss. I don't know how other high-flow cats do, but I was pretty impressed by that.
I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but at least I'm a pretty color
the stage 3 is touchy, but not on/off id say put it on, my car is n/a but i use one, and love it, i think the stage 3 is great for a daily driver

The exhaust wouldn't be a problem to get made. Looks like I'll be throwing a high-flow cat in there. Atlest 2.5" for exhaust? What would be prime? As far as the shopping around yeah thats one of the reasons I'm not starting til September gives me all that time to get prices and find out EXACTLY what I'm gonna do. Just wanna make sure I'm getting started in the right direction, don't want to spend hard earned money on things that won't do me any good.
one thing that is very important when u boost something or do as much work to it as you r is take the car to a tunner or dyno (same thing) and have the car dyno and tunned. this is alittle pricy but it will help the car in the long and short run and add more hp by the time its over. they make sure ur car is running right, not to rich, not to lean, just perfect which will make you happy! it is useless doin it all if u dont want to spend the money and have it all done right. o yea, dont forget all the other things like lifters, gaskets, little stuff like that that will add up tp big bucks fast! i no from experience!
The dyno tune mroe than a grand?
And where the hell would I find one around central illinois? Are their like guides on the net for locations? Would I have to go to chicago or indianapolis?
With the parts listed above should I also look into replacing the intake manifold? Not sure if I should or shouldn't. As far as getting it tuned yeah better belive it. Not dropping this much into it only to let me not getting it done right ruin it. Whats the avg price on getting it tuned? I have no clue how much to leave back for that.
actually, there is a spot in illinois that has dynos out the A@#, hahn has a dyno, there are 2 other companies close to them as well, if you buy hahns kit you might be able to talk them into a discounted dyno run, or maybe even 1 free pull.
Your list looks good, how much power are you looking to make? the stock ecos will go right to around 250, Hypsy is running i beleive somewhere around 236hp on a stock eco block, still hasnt turned the boost up that far yet, he would be a good guy to talk to as he works for a shop that can get just about any part you need and hes a pretty nice guy from my dealings with him.
Shop around, look for group buys, 2.5 inch minum if your going to run as bad a motor as all that list says 3 inch would be better, turbo motors produce enough backpressure without exhaust size really mattering to much, plus your injected so its not as huge a deal, the lightweight flywheel deffinatly, those things rock, me and a couple buddies just installled a new spec1 clutch and fidanza flywheel in my cavy, havent got it all the way back together yet but i'll let you know the difference on a stock motor

.
One more thing is bushings, check out energy suspension or prothane(same company really) they sell poly bushings which are twice as strong as your factory soft rubber bushing, these bushings absorb energy so when you dump the clutch the engine can roll forward as much as 2 or 3 inches pushing against these bushings, replace them with the new ones and your engine cant move nearly as far and everything is transfered directly to the ground where it belongs, i just installed new tranny bushings as well, wasnt that bad of a deal honestly, took about 10 mines per side with a sawzall and hammer and screw driver to remove(should of read the directions alittle more closly ) and a big c clamp and a couple pecies of 1/4 inch metal went right together.
your probably going to need to look into some sort of management system for the engine as the stock ecu will freak if you tweak the motor to far, some guys are have alot of luck with emanage others arent, there are sources out there, one j-body member is working on an obd2 datalogger that can reprogram same as gm does, so you could alter your maps and such with it.
As far as the turbo kit, i would go with hahn they've been in business a long time i think 15 years or more, they have alittle experience with this stuff plus their kits are really well laid out and trully bolt on with everything being included you dont have to fab much at all, again talk to hypsy, he just installed a hahn stage 2 kit and as i said can also get you a good deal on them as well as any other performance goodie you would be interested in, also check with wink and jason from aplusperformance they have alot of performance goodies. another great place is gravana, the prices are good the shipping is fair and quick and if they dont have it in stock they will have it drop shipped to you, my spec clutch wasnt stocked at the time of shipout so they drop shipped it and i got it in 3 days from order date, the tranny bushings showed up 2 days later one of those days was a sunday

so not bad at all. another site i found that has a few little things is ultrarev.com i got a fidanza flywheel from them shipped ups in 4 days, fits perfect, and it was on sale for just over 300 not bad at all.
keep us posted on the progress we all like project pictures

J~
Well due back stateside in Sept. Thats why its put off til then but definatley gonna take pics the whole way through. As far as the illinois deal that was another guy. Im in De. Only dyno I've found close to me is about an 45 mins away. I'll have to get up with the list of people and business you gave me. Hopefully I can find one company that can supply everything and get a lil bit of a discount. As of right now that list will be what im doing unless i go with Hahn's turbo its a lot higher than cav extreme. so adding the bushings to my lil list here and gonna start lookin at a fuel system. If any one can get all the parts I'm looking for let me know. I'll get with you since i cant post my email addy on here.
As far as how much hp i'm trying to make......well I have no idea. I dont really have a hp goal at the moment.
1. If your going with Patriot Head, get their valves assembled with it.
2. Get the Hahn kit over the Cav Connection one
3. Like said before, Stage III clutch would be too much, stage II should be ok
4. If your going turbo, save your money and get a custom mendral bent 3" exhaust system instead of buying a 2 1/4" and then spending your money again on another one.
Like Event said, shop around. That's the BEST thing I can say...don't depend on ebay either.
That's pretty all I have to say.
