Do you really know what a connecting rod is?

Learn more about how engine work.

What do they do? same thing as OEM, go around in the engine.

Why the comment MFK? I think it was a fair question.

but just in case.

how engines work

The Connecting rod is what connects the piston to the crankshaft, hence the name.

I'm sure that article can show it better than I can explain it.

Aftermarket connecting rods for example can handle higher amounts of boost for Forced induction engines without breaking, unlike the stock rods.

I'm sure there are more advantages, but since I don't have some myself I have very little room to say much.

most of the company that sell rods advertise the benefits of the rods so I saw it like a newbie question.

Plus, I felt that he ask that question like if it was a bolt on like a CAI or WAI.

it's not just what it is, but what it's made of, and how it's made. wheather it's made of 1010, 1053, 530A36, 5140, 4340, or any other common alloys i forgot aside from aluminum and titanium. then shotpeened, billet, forged, exct.

this is all done to increase the strength of the con rod. not really nessessary on *most* n/a engines but needed for high horse turbo wagons.

Most newer aftermarket rods are also lighter, thus reducing internal (rotating) Mass... Less mass=more power. same thing with cam pulleys

Fair enough. no big deal.

also don't forgot the need to balence the rotating assy' when using aftermarket parts.

cant you just take you stock ones then and shave the excess off and polish them?would that be the same thing or no?

no, you can't. i'm guessing shaving will reduce the strength even more, which isn't good bcuz i doubt the stock ones are all that strong

aftermarket connecting rods are mod to be stronger, not just look good. they are built from better, stronger materials to last longer

some rods are lighter, some stock rods are crap, and aftermarket rods end up being much heavier but also much stronger. like said, billet or forged 4340 is about the best compromise between strength and cost. i shudder to think what a set of titanium rods would cost.

Actually, "shaving" or polishing the beams, if done properly with the additional work, will streangthen the rods. The parting line down the side of the rod is from the casting/forging(our's is a one shot forging, either 1010 steel or powdered metal, aftermarket rods use muliple forgings). This line creates whats known as a stress riser. After grinding the rod beam, Magna-flux it(checking for cracks under the parting seam), get them shot-peened(streangthens the metal surface) and balance them and you'll have a much stronger and slightly lighter rod(about 20-40 grams, at 6500rpm works out to be about a couple hundred pounds of momentary inertia). The rods still won't be as strong as aftermarket forgings, but still a significant improvment over stock.
This is what most of the circle track racers used to do, till the early '90's, with the advent of affordable, readily available forged rods.
