Hello folks,
With the help of Event's muscle, we got the AEM alt and Unorthodox pully combo on the old 2.4 yesterday. Unstall was actually not that bad (price of that 27mm socket wasn't nice though
)
For the record if any newcomers missed it, you use your factory pulley no problem.
But when I pulled up to the old apt complex, put in park, and reved on the engine a little to mess around, I noticed my headlights getting brighter as I reved, then dimmed back to where they were before the reving.
Now I'm not tlaking anything dramatic, but there was the diff in light outpt intensity.
I know this can be a common thing for folks with systems.
But I"m all stock nothing fancy.
Now I will say, I am running the matrix projector lenses. (brand spankin' new from eghey $60) And they use the highbeam 9005 for highs and lows.
I won't get another chance to test the bulbs at night again any time soon so I'm asking for suggestions now.
Do I need a grounding kit, stronger amp, or is this just a natural thing I never noticed since I don't drive the car much?
Thanks guys/gals,
-M

Although the setup you have frees up the most potential HP by spinning everything slower, (less energy wasted spinning accessories, more energy left for turning wheels), your larger AEM alt pulley is further slowing the alternator down. At idle your probably not getting a sufficient charge. Get a voltage meter and see how many volts your getting at idle. If you're getting less than 13.5 volts at idle, you will likely kill your battery over time, and you'll need to figure out how to spin that thing faster at idle or get an alt that makes more juice at lower rpm. I've heard of people getting custom winds on their alts to correct this.
Even though everything is running stock but super light still not getting the juice.
Interesting
But yeah, that is a PHAT pulley by AEM thats for sure.
Will probably have to get another alt. with more juice.
That would seem the easiest. Then again we'd have to replace the alt pulley again.
lol.
Oh well,
Thanks for the tip,

that was probably the largest alternator pulley i;ve seen. its almost the size of the alternator in width/diameter light, but it looks as if its slowing it down too much. from what i remember the radius was close to an inch more...
has anyone ever had a problem with using two pulleys from different manufacturers?
Well there are higher amp alternators out there.
Gonna check it out.
Hopefully the sellers aren't shady.

I hvae that set up, I noticed some changes in lights when I go faster, I have projector clear lights, not sure which bulbs came with them. I am not too worried about it, I will do an AVR test on it and see what its putting out. Did anyone feel a difference with these? I didnt, seems like a waste of 300$.

Same here Chris,
I have the Martix projectors and thats when I noticed the lights.
But they dont keep getting brighter as I drive along. Just after the initial depressing of the gas pedal then they brighten a bit.
And the only reason I installed the set was cause I didn't pay retail for the pulleys fortunately.
You have the HO intake intstalled?
I waiting to install mine again, will need that spacer.
But the car to me feels like its straining less to get going on the road.
Esp. up hills. And i do notice my rpms reving up a little higher. Not much but a little.
I remember I had the same feeling with the HO intake so I hope to get better results still.
But them alternators ain't cheap that's for sure.

I'd say upgrade the "big 3" wires... stock grounds seem to suck on these cars.. might just fix that problem.

my friend had the rsm pullies on his , and a 180 amp alt , and being it was a auto , no charging at idle
the rsm alt is close in size to aem's if not bigger
we tried the 2.3HO crank , my mantapart power alt pulley , and stock , in all combonations
and the only way to get his to charge at idle was all stock pullies , even with the grounding cables and larger 4 gauge power and ground wires , didnt help
ive got the 2.3 HO and the larger alt pulley on my 00 , and at idle it sits right about batt voltage at idle
so pretty much there is no fix for the auto trans people
the 5spds should be ok cause the idle alot higher
his and mine both jumped up at 1000 rpm
I dunno... I've had the Unorthodox Racing crank pulley on three auto's so far... never a problem. Of course.. that was JUST the crank... no alternator pulley. But I was also using a stock alternator, not a 180amp... maybe that was the problem (in addition?)

we even used a stock alt on his
and my alt is still the stock 1
he had problems with his , i havent had any problems with mine
Thanks for all the tips/thoughts guys.
Yeah, I mean if I can get the idle to like over 750 all is cool at stop lights or whatever.
Gonna try some other things still before I mess around with some damn $500 (exaggerated) alternator.
I remember when I was the older style 2.3 tps, my idle was a little higher. Maybe try some. more grounds. Find another factory alt somewhere. Mess with thte idle screw a little. Wosrt case I just yoink the alt. pulley.
But we'll see.
Thanks,

I have the same pulley combination with the 2.3 HO and multiple grounding wires all over the bay, my lights still dim at idle and only "go back to normal" at somewhere over 900 or 1000 rpm. I just installed the 2.3 HO manifold and my idle is a little higher.. around 800, but I still need to work some kinks out so it might change... before I installed it my car idled around 600rpm and I haven't had any problems with the alternator not charging right (like starting the car etc.) and I've had the pullies on for a couple months now.
15.69@86.670 - stock 99Z
That's what I'm hoping for once I get my HO intake back in there.
I don't use the car much, so I"m not too too worried about things yet.
Just gonna have to take tings one step at a time.
