exhaust for my cav

hey im new here. I have a black 1997 z24 2.4L cavalier. So far i have a full pioneer sound system except subs, which i got for my bday. I will be getting my aem air intake and b&m shiftplus kit soon, i ordered them already. I was wondering what you guys think of the magnaflow race series mufflers. I want to get the one with the product number 14843. Also is there any differance in sound between the round mufflers or the oval ones. And i want to get a magnaflow high flow cat. but i dont know what sizes to get so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for your help.

i have the 14803 (dtm style) and i love it. i would go with 2.25 or 2.50 inch pipe from the cat back so either 2.25 or 2.5 in and out cat. as for the sound differnce, ive always know oval mufflers to be a little quiter.

i have the 14851 on my car, with a 14" resonator and high flow cat. i like it though i may add another resonator

the 14851 is a 5x8 oval
14843 is a 6" round

i'm sure either will fit, the 6" round will be quieter than the 5x8 body i think

I have the 7" Round XL Muffler on my car (Part number 13732). It's not the race series like you're talking about but I like it the best of all I've had on the car. It's quieter than the fart can canisters you see on all the imports and that's the way, uh huh uh huh, I like it.

There's reall no difference made by the shape of the muffler, their shape is simply for better fitting in different installations. Basically, the bigger the muffler the quieter the exhaust. Remember that when designing your exhaust system so you get the sound you want.

For the most part, yes. The canister style tend to give out this high pitched noise because most of them are hollow. The Oval style tends to deepen the tone (at least the magnaflow ones do).

If your getting a new cat-back setup and upgrade the piping, get the cat to whatever size piping you are upgrading to, whether it's 2 1/4" or 2 1/2". If your not upgrading your piping, it would be a waste of your money to buy a cat and install it cause it wouldn't benefit with the stock piping on restricting the exhaust flow from a bigger cat.

I personally have magnaflow mufflers and love them. Just make sure you get the oval style mufflers...I think you will enjoy those over the canister style as far as sound and looks.

Ok. I think im going to get one of the oval magnaflow race mufflers. I like the more deep powerful sound. How much do you think it would be for 2.25 size piping would cost to be fitted for my car. Along with the new piping will i also need a cat. and resonator or not. thanks again guys.

If your going to change the piping, it's best to get rid of the stock size catalytic converter cause it's just being another restriction on your exhaust system. As far as resonator...I personally don't think you'll need if cause I think your exhaust will sound fine. If later you don't like it, just get one welded on.

Get a magnaflow cat by the way...2 1/4" size of course.

Go to your local performance shop and get prices. If your going to go the "custom" route, make sure you get it mandrel bent (not crush bent). Personally, I think your better off just buying a Magnaflow or Borla setup so you don't have to worry about the sound cause they sound beautiful and you won't have to worry about fitting issues. Also installation would be cheaper.

Good luck bro

I highly recomend the magnaflow exhaust if you like deeper sounds, i have a dual magnaflow exhaust and love it!!! Sounds nothing like all the high pitch noise i hear from most cars with fart cannons!

inside a car definately sounds different than outside a car, due to this, for you to really hear you sound get to a parking lot and have someone drive your car and get on the gas decently hard...

then you will hear what everyone else hears on the road.

i;ve had a lot of people do this when jkrew met for years and alot of people didnt like what they heard with single and dual exhausts, most needed an extra resonator to take out the high pitched noises that they thought they didnt have

also if you cant get mandrel, which is what most places dont have, compression is more than fine...

there is a difference in ways pipes are shaped.

mandrel keeps a circle, compression bends the pipe but distorts the shape, but basically keeps the diameter, crush is when you see ridges in the pipes, like commonly seen at pep boys and auto parts stores....

That is oh so very true. I finally got to hear my exhaust system just recently on video and I was satisfied but when I had my old quad tip, flowmaster mufflers and finally heard what it sounded like...lets just say that I'm glad I switched to Magnaflow with single tips LOL

Find a performance shop, they MORE than likely have one with a professional welder.

I'm gonna have to add my 2 cents here...

round straight through style muflers don't nessarilyy have a high pithed noise and a resontor will cut down on noise a bit but again I don't think its nedded.... personally I LOVE he way my exhaus sounds.... This (click that) is my car with t full exhaust done, header, cat, 2.25 inch piping straight through canister style mufler, and no resonsator, personally I love the tone of it

must disagree on two basis...

round straight through mufflers and oversized pipes can make for a high pitched sound cause when on the throttle, sound bounces around, if its not absorbed then thats the sound many of you have heard from all different types of cars with cannon style mufflers or reg style, but straight through.

and the second part is that, Darkstars, your car isnt really a fair comparison,as the majority of people dont have 13 second cammed cars.... well close to 12 second last i read.

also the video posted was at idle. alot of cars sound great at idle, but once they get up into higher rpms, thats when the higher pitched stuff comes out.

more or less in your car, your cams alone are processing enough air to fill up the size of your pipes, and not stagnate air flow.

a stock car will def have less air flow, and an ohv (i know personally) will have even less cfm than most DOHC engines.

the length of the muffler (direct reference to the amount of packing inside the muffler) will usually be the main determinant on sound. a single muffler usually doesnt cut it in normal cases. yours with a cam is a whole new ball park... also forced induction, like turbos... rare to see one sound bad with the amount of air filling the exhaust pipes.

do you have any video or pictures with you on the gas? if not, if you get bored today, have someone tape you on the street or parking lot. you might have already, and like said, your car with a cam is WAY different than your avg car with just a cat back, or even full exhaust.

Event-

right click save as play in windows media player - driving through chicago underground, this was recenetly (with no cams)

burnout with the cams - this one I'm not real fond of cause recording video with a digital camera the camera doesn't pick up on the deep tones, so as the car gets farther away all it picks up in the sound is the higher pitched tones

Oh and by the way no more fast cavi 13.08 @106 with leting off to avoid hititng the limiter on spray but since then I 14 inchers with drag radials are gone in place of 18's, nitrous and cams and Tb are gone and ditched the pulley when I decided to add a couple hundred lbs of of stereo @!#$ hahahah so its slow as hell now

i hate making sacrafices... which is why i'll never build a show car with performance parts on it. if i build a show car it'll be one stock under the hood and the hood will never get raised.

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

^^^ it started off all go and just a little show, but then running premium gas and getting 170-200 miles out of a full tank of gas in my one and only car that gets driven everyday just wasn't cuttin it for me, speciually when i spent all this mone to go fast and could barely use it, usually if I'm in my car its rushhour on the highway to and from work
