Magnaflow or Borla?
Saturday, May 28, 2005 12:58 PM
Right now I have a Pacesetter header, Magnaflow High Flow Cat, an 18'' resonator and the RKSport cat back with the Magnaflow muffler. It kind of sounds like rice and all so I was wondering if the Borla would sound any better. I have 2.25 piping. Also, what muffler would you guys recommend through Borla, whether it be the Turbo, Boomer, ProXS, etc...

Thanks guys!

And I did search, basically got that Magnaflow and Borla sound the best.

First off , what the hell does rice sound like?

I had a borla boomer rocket muffler , with a full exhaust , it was VERY DEEP and loud.

I now have a magnaflow , and its deep but no where as near as loud as the borla.

well it's not going to sound like a fox body mustang... i'm running an HKS HI-power muffler and it doesn't sound ricey at all.

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

there is no right or wrong as far as exhaust sounds. just whatever floats your boat.

Put a longer resonator in....that is if your definition of rice is due to the raspiness/weekwacker sounds. You should be able to fit a 30" or something close to that in there. The Magnaflow that came with the RK kit doesn't do a very good job of killing the bees with a factory header let alone an aftermarket one. I have been wanting to change to a different muffler for years, but am too lazy and too cheap.

well i have the rksport magnaflow setup now and to me it has a deep tone to it. but the piping didnt really fit my year cav all that well for some reason so i had to get the pipes rebent, and theres this annoying creaking sound coming out from under my car i think because theres not enough bracing for the exhaust system and it moves around under the car too much.
so i ordered myself one of the borla proXS mufflers the other day so im hoping i can get my exhaust setup fixed and be able to compare the two first hand.

I know it won't sound all V-8ity. I just want a deeper tone, not so high pitch (rice, for those that wanted to know what I meant). It sounds good in the car but outside it sounds like poop.

Where are some good places for Borla mufflers, because I'll be damned if I have to pay their stock prices.

Thanks guys!

basically a skippy or jif question

jason, spend 5 minutes, read this

http://magnaflow.com/05news/magazine/05sportc.asp

and you will know the use of a resonator which is what you need really

pretty damn pointless to switch mufflers, just to get the same results really when you can tune what you have

mufflers alone arent gonna reduce high pitched tones.

Thanks Event..

I remember you had that link up somewhere else before...I just never really read it to much extent.

Also, not to get off topic too much, my O2 sensor is still plugged into stock size piping. Can my local Midas guy get me 2.25 piping for that section and tack in the O2 sensor there? Is this robbing any horsepower, with the piping being stock?

I was kinda pissed when I had my exhaust put on that this was still stock, never really did anything about it though.

Also, should I get a hanger? As the muffler, now, is bolted onto the frame or where ever it is bolted to.

Thanks.

yeah for a shop, just tell em to add a hanger, or you can do it yourself. you can also get an adjustable one to change the height, etc... if the muffler is bolted to the frame and you arent having any problems... i wouldnt sweat it.... like no vibes, etc...

i actually had mine welded to a few parts of the frame recently... some parts still are

as for the o2 sensor, get a shop to put in a stretch of pipe the same size as the upgraded stuff... then tell em, to add an o2 bung hole..... sounds funny, but thats the real term for it. basically its a screw hole they weld in a pipe for the o2 to fit... system will only flow as good as the smallest pipe.

with that, your pretty much set

lundis, no prob. back in the day i did as well

That is because the RK kit starts at the back of the Cat right after the O2 sensor.

Yes get that solid mount replaced. It will break at the most inconvenient time. I initially just had Midas put a rubber strap to replace the solid mount, then later on I had the muffler moved back closer to the stock location and a hanger made to use the stock hanger location.

That is what I'm afraid of. I'm going down to Ocean City, Maryland, June 18th. I live like an hour north of Philly, so as you can tell, it will be quite a drive. I don't want anything going wrong within that week. As I probably won't have enough money to fix anything.

Do you think my body shop can do the work? Just wondering because my car is going in this week for some work...and if they could, I might as well get it done then and there...if not I'll go to my imcompitant Midas guy (who didn't know a resonator made it quieter). Oh boy....

I would get the flowmaster.. I like the sound better....

AEM Short Ram Intake
B&M Short Throw Shifter

i;ve yet to hear a flow master sound decent.

most people who dont have resonators, like the sound from the vibrations of it IN the car, but very few have heard their car when someone else drives it....

granted it depends on the series, a figure a decent straight through muffler with packing an easier choice to tune.

rice sounds like bumble bees, example: almost all hondas driven by teenagers, haha

Re: engine swap??????

I like the way the pacesetter exhaust sounds. But I was also getting tired of the loud noise it made. Now the only time it is loud is when I'm speeding up or revving it up. Its a very quiet ride other than that. Just a suggestion to anybody who wants to have the sound but also likes some peace and quiet.

Wow that has NO resonator??? Sounds great to me.

And yeah Flowmasters arent the greatest for sound..mainly because they use Baffles. Thats why Im ditching my 40 series.

rice is a food, food doesnt really make sounds.

as an example of how remedial that word is... theres not even a set definition. but so many people use it, and dont even know where it came from.

nothing personal, but if you use a word and dont really have a real definition to it, or know why it exists, doesnt speak much for the person using it.

especially when there are more accurate and definate ways to describe something....

not bad.... got any with you in gear and goin by?

also another good note on that, your pipes arent oversized which also help minimize high pitched sounds.
