loose bearings / no alignment?

...im not too familiar with this part of my vehicle, but just had a set of new pirellis mounted yesterday. wanted it re-aligned, as the new tires are a couple of mms shorter than my old ones. idiots at my local firestone don't know jack s**t, btw. when i came to pick up my car, guy told me my rear wheel bearings were loose, and therefore couldnt get an accurate alignment.

usually, i know when a mechanic is b.s.ing me, but i dont know enough about wheel bearings to know if he was telling the truth or if he was too lazy to align the car. true or false? also, anyone know the solution to this problem? Im guessing new wheel bearings...i know they run close to $100.00, at least at my local advance (already checked...

btw...they charged me freakin $90.00 to mount and balance the new tires. i argued about this price for a bit, but to no avail. next time, i think im gonna get some dishsoap and mount em myself, lol. only reasong i went is b/c i had a "lifetime alignment", which they made a scowl on their faces, like it hurt them to honor it. and they didn't, as they didn't align the car.

jack your car up and grab both sides of the wheel, see if they are really loose. or take to another shop and just ask em to see if they are loose... should be no charge, if they arent take it back and then tell em to align it....

i;ve had worn bearings before and got alignments....

event, u never fail to come thru, thanks. any danger of driving around with loose/worn bearings? I actually had a front one replaced not long ago...seems like it wouldnt be too detrimental to performance on the non-drive non-steered wheels...i'll let it go until i have the cash for my new wheels and tires if im not gonna suffer or damage anything...any thoughts?

if wheel bearings were out enough that it effected the alignment, you would be able to hear it while driving and trust me it would be OBVIOUS.

...thanks, spotabee. i feel like i wanna call customer service on em. The car drives great, no noise or shaking or anything. lazy employee (dont wanna call him a mechanic or tech, cause i think i probably could have performed what he did) probably didnt wanna put it on the alignment rack.
