Wednesday, May 25, 2005 11:07 AM
Ok, so im flippin thru RKSport on the throne and i go over the oil cooler they got advertised. Its not too expensive, is it worth getting, and will it help out getting any ponies? Im thinking if it makes the motor run cooler than thats better, does anyone have this or had this and any comments on it?

before getting a cooler, do you know what your oil temp is?

you should really only add a cooler, when you know what your temps for oil are--aka install an oil temp guage.

that way you arent overcooling the oil not allowing it to reach operating temp.

Yep^^^
I would like to add...

By cooling it to much, the oil goes down in grade. Our cars should operate in no less then 30 grade weight, any less could cause more engine wear.

...i own one. installed it about 2 years ago on my 2.2. never had any problems, probably put about 30k on it since ive had it. increases your oil capacity about 1/4 a quart. never really had any problems with overcooling, but i live in nc..never gets too cold. seems my operating temp stays about the same. i do use good lubricants tho, usually redline with an additive, like rev guard. car runs great.

operating temp can remain the same, however, doesnt account for possible wear inside if you dont know what temp the oil is and should be at.

its better to know if you need it or not, than to add something you have no reason to have...

by then you are just adding parts that make no difference. just extra stuff on the car

it's called Auto-X and to include I live in NM wheres its in the 100's+ already. I have one on mine, just installed 2 weeks ago. My car runs way better in the heat we have here, especially at higher speeds and during the heat of the day. I drive a long ass highway everyday to work so I do notice a difference pretty easily. But I would recommend an oil gauge or gauges.

im thinking about getting gauges, probably two, autometer cobalt, probably like an air/fuel then the oil temp. So the overall vibe im getting here is not to get it. my car is going to be my primary winter car too, and last winter here in SE CT was pretty harsh. My lowrider was buried halfway up the door. So im thinkin in the winter itll be too cold for the oil. I dunno still, we'll see what this summer brings and what i do for mods. Thanks though for the feedback, and any more is welcome.

...i answered the original ?. , didn't mean to "jack". or was the post directed towards stephen? sorry, didnt think about it, just trying to be helpful to whoever.

to avoid "avoiding to subject" again, then, also, carbon, it has been said before that a 2 row cooler like the one rk offers for the 2.2 doesnt really cool much. i believe the 2.4 is like, an 8 pass cooler, so might be more effecective...but i dunno what u drive.

nah it was towards steven, ok so say i get intake, headerback, short throw, plugs, wires, motor mounts, pulley kit, maybe a few more little things, then would the oil cooler be worth getting or still a no, not worth it will give little hp back?

...carbon, I doubt it'll give any hp back....u believe I saw u have a 2.2 as well. it looks good on the car, though, adds some "rice", lol, but I like it....i have it mounted right in front of my radiator, looks kinda like an intercooler. but like ive said, i live in nc, and it is already 85 here...any possible cooling advantages I can obtain, I obtain. I run that "ice water" coolant in my radiator, exhaust heat shield wrap, and am saving for an extractor hood....

^^
probably

but like event and others said
you wont know unless you monitier your oil temp

Re: Oil Cooler from RKsport?!

As Event said the best way to know if you need an oil cooler is using an oil temp gauge. Oil temps should be in the 195ºF-240ºF band , and after 260ºF will be really hot.

Anyway for the same price of the 4 passes low efficiency and high restriction tube and fin PermaCool Cooltek oil cooler you can obtain a Derale 10 passes really efficient, low restriction stacked plate Setrab and 180ºF thermostatically controlled oil cooler. It is really small but the difference is like day and night. Also the thermostat sandwich adapter avoid cools the oil engine during the winter, opening only when oil pass 180ºF.

Here is the link for the Derale DER-15602 engine oil cooler.

I hope it helps.
