Has anyone tried the Standard Abrasives Porting Kit on a cylender head? Would it be something possible by a DIYer or is this something that requires special tools that only a machine shop has?

I think all you need is a die grinder and you need to make sure you know what you are doing. I read that whole thing a couple of time, because i wanted to do it. I ended up just buying a head. It suggests that you practice on a head before you do it to yours. Its a lot of work.
hells gyeah!
to quote bruce almighty....
its gooooooooood!
you;ll need some kind of die grinder like the dremel advantage setup that accept 1/4 inch collets.
i tore apart, ported and polished, etc etc etc... all my work... in the living room.
how long did it take you to do?
If your not confortable doing a full port job dont try it. A minor job is easy, simple cleaning up of casting flash and port matching everything will make a noticeable difference.

few days.... you dont sit down and try to do it as fast as you can. i did some each night, then cleaned it out and went along with the directions. like said, it was a learning process, so time really shouldnt be a factor, especially on your first try. each person will be different...
what i did in a few days some may take a few more days, some may take half the time, depending on experience.
best advice i was told, "sit down, and take your time. if in a rush let a shop do it"
aluminum is easy to remove, harder to replace.

If you have the money and can have a shop do it... then let a shop do it. If you dont have time, and want a quality head right away, let a shop do it. I've heard that it takes people so much time to do and if they @!#$ it up, then there goes a perfectly good head.
its too scary for me to do on my own.

a few days is not alot of time, especially only putting in 1-2 hours a night...
but i agree if you have little patience, pay a shop around 300$ to do it.

danke!
i think around 2100-2200. ironically i am leaning more towards 2200. i get the final reciept soon. i spent an extra 100$ on swain tech coating for the pistons just for the hell of it.
is that swain tech coating the equivalent of what ceramic coating is for headers?

more or less yup. it also has a coating on the skirts to keep oiling decent as well. shears it off better.
I bought the kit and did my first real porting job on a 2.2 head for my 90 project car.
No exagerrating at all, I probably had at least 30 hours into this head, but those are rookie hours. I'm sure I could cut a few hours off if I did it again, but oh well. The fun is doing it yourself.
I am by no means a patient person, and I survived through doing it... and enjoyed every minute of it!
If you have the drive to do it, I highly recommend it.
Oh BTW, I ordered a seperate Cross Buff kit as the ones supplied in the big kit didnt fit down my exhaust ports.

Yes this is an old thread but hey, at least I'm using the search function.
Event and Seriouz, how did you end up with your port jobs? Any idea on what increases you had in power and fuel efficiency? I'm at the same point you were before you did it, looking at that Standard Abrasives kit and hoping to port/polish my '98 2200. It has 200k on it and runs perfectly ... do you think porting the motor is worth it or should I look into a new motor? I wouldn't be messing with pistons/crank/cam as I'm on a budget but could do the smaller things (valves, springs, retainers, etc.). Honestly I'm new to this and open to your suggestions. Event, I read your writeup and am wondering how the rest of it went, and I'd love to get my hands on any specs from that job that you have available, including the flow charts you mentioned.
