summer heat and performance

I really don't know whether this is a performance or maintenance question but here goes. I have an 03 Ecotec, 2 years old, 34k miles. Now that the really warm weather has started, it seems like my car drags like an old dog. It don't think it feels as bad at night when it's cooler out. It didn't seem this bad last year but maybe my memory is off. Am I correct to blame the heat? How bad can the summer heat affect performance and is there anything I can do to help it besides bags of ice under the hood ?

heat does a lot. my car pulls harder when it's cold. it's just how things go.

Cooler air is less dense, thus better combustion = better performance. And if you have the AC on, it's really a dog then, it just sucks.

Correct me if I'm wrong.?.

Or is it more dense? I forget, one of the two.......

Its denser, colder air is denser which means youre burning more air. Thats why it runs better when its cooler outside especially with 4cyl. It gets humid where I live, which drains the cars power seems like.

...cold air is more dense, therefore containing more O2 to burn in the same occupied space, increasing combustion. but you were on the right track, jason.

To answer your ?, mark, you can buy an extractor hood...may cool things off a bit, but not much if it is 90+degrees...you can leave off the a/c (itll drain, like, 15hp)...and...well, that's about it,my car is slower than usual in the heat too, lol.

just cut a hole in your hood and make a new intake to go up through your hood instead of down...

the warmer air will help with gas mileage. Colder air burns more gas.

That idea would be cool, the ultimate ram air, lol...but guess you'd hafta worry about your filter flying off at 60 plus. Plus, some hater would probably see your car paked at the mall and steal your K&N, just because...

we've done it on my friend's civic with an extra hood. filter never went flyin and the pipe rose a good foot out of the engine bay.

get an oil cooler, the colder your engine runs from the cooler oil will help compensate for the outside temp. I have one on mine and its already around 100 and my car runs perfectly fine day or night. Another idea is to insulate certain components under your hood, radiator hoses any hose or assembly that helps with maintaining your vehicles temperature that helps a bit too.

Try "Redline Water Wetter", it's like $10/bottle and it helps your cooling system shed heat more effectively, as well as reduce detonation due to "hot spots". If it doesn't help you, you're out $10. If it does, problem solved.
