is this a good price for exhaust?
Tuesday, May 10, 2005 4:00 PM
Hey i just got paid doing my crappy a$$ job that i barely started working with my friend at his dads landscaping company. i got paid $150 so i headed down to some muffler shops around town and got some prices. one place told me that the would do my exhaust from the cat back in 2.25 inch piping for $90 bucks and the guy suggested that it would be good to to the part that goes down from the header to the cat and the catback. for the pipe from the header to the cat and the catback he said $125. is this a good price? should i also have him do the pipe from the header to the cat or leave that stock till i get headers? Also i will be using a 24" purple hornie from jegs or a 24" thrush glass pack dont know which one to use bought the purple hornie and the glasspack was given to me brand new. and also i will be using the oval magnaflow universal muffler that i already had on before.is the price good? is this a good setup for my exhaust? and should i have him make me a new downpipe?whichis what i guess thats what its called.

dont do any of it till youget enough for at least the header back, but it would be better to wait till you had the header also...

^^^^^^ Agree. Get the header first, and do the whole setup at once. Get a high-flow cat too, since their gonna be cutting it out and welding it back in anyway- with open exhaust that stock cat is going to become a choke point.

Save for header then save for magnaflow cat (50ish bucks on ebay) and then get the exhaust all done in 2.25.

If not, then just but a ghetto muffler and stick on it if you just want sound.

I got ALL my exhaust done (fixed my downpipe-obx), welded a new cat on and bung and ran the exhaust back to my muffler. 2.25 compression bent for 45 bucks. No joke. Your not gonna get it done THAT cheap though.

My full exhaust, including downpipe, welding the cat on, welding the muffler, and running the two pipes on each side of the car is $150. I spent about $160 in parts, so a full exhaust system (minus the header cuz I don't have one ) for about $310.

doing the whole setup at once may increase price drastically. has anyone ever priced out what it costs for a shop to install a header, considering there will be removing the alternator, the belt, and some creative positioning....

if you do a catback with cat converter FIRST, its gonna cost a bit less overall.

cause if you take the header to the shop, avg prices start around 250 up to 400 on a 2.2 ohv to install JUST the header.

if you have the catback or cat coverter on back already done, the header you can do at home, clamp it and take it to a local place and pay someone twenty bucks to weld it together and you are done.

same if you get the header first, install it, then clamp it, then go pay 20$ or so to get a weld put on it.... later you can get the catback for a decent price.

but waiting, getting all the parts and then taking em all in to get put on.... header installs cost decent money

also i would focus on getting a decent muffler as opposed to a crappy one. crappy ones are usually lower quality and the packing doesnt last as long.

well i guess i try and order the magnaflow cat on ebay and then do my exhaust when i get that and hopefully order the headers right after or ill probably just wait and then install the header and then have them do the exhaust then. oh and event what kind of muffler would you recommend? i thought that the purple hornie would be good quality considering its from flowtech. but ill just wait till i get paid and probably save up for a couple of weeks and then do it all at once.

purple hornies are usually good for a resonator, but any muffler with decent packing like magnaflow, borla, etc is good to add as well.

whatever you do, don't go to midas.

im starting on my exhaust now... and the header is the very first thing i bought

i suggest doing it all at once

Do it all at once, it will save time and money. The exhaust is a nice upgrade, so most def. do it right!! A resonator will quiet it down if you don't like loud exhausts!

I'll have a sig someday....................

because midas sucks. find another shop that will do a weld for $10 or $15.

If you want to, and if you can weld, go to Home Depot and see if they rent out welders(the one by me does, it's like $30 or $40--around that price range)....if you want to claim you did it all yourself. I plan on an exhaust upgrade, and if I can't get my hands on a welder I am going to rent it out. No point spending $700 on one if you are gonna use it for only a day or two. In fact, weld your cat on all at the same time.

so i take it BOTH of you have been to ALLLLLL the midas locations in the US. granted it is a chain, not all are bad. it all depends on who is working there and if they are a stickler for the labor by the books.

midas here locally, i paid 15$ for the weld when i installed my header. same for meineke. basically it all depends on where you go and who you know.

I went to my local muffler shop and they quoted me 325 for 2.25 piping from the header back and a high flow cat. with install

I've been pondering whether or not I should get a header with that, pacesetter makes a nice header. just not the black one....I might go full exhaust system.

get a ceramic coated one. well worth the money. pacesetter makes em.

a cat costs 50-60$ at justmagnaflow.com

pacesetter headers go all the way to the cat basically. it comes with the pipe. so basically buy the header and the cat by yourself and alll they should have to do is a cat back, and it should be no where near 300$ if you shop around. granted every place is different, thats a bit high

Yeah i was gonna make my own exhaust at school and use the schools supplies to make it but one of the ag teachers found out and said that is why the auto tech people get so much money because they give their stuff away so they didnt let me do it. i offered to pay but they still didnt let me do it. sucks because i probably couldve gotten the cat for cheaper considering that its for the school and the school gets a discount. and the piping and resonator were there and i wasnt gonna have to pay for them. basically a free exhaust system.

not really, just call around. and explain to em EXACTLY what you want.... if you are vague or give the hint you are new to it, some will pick up on it and charge you out the rear.

hahaha hmm. I was gonna comment on that but hey someone did it for me. hahaha.

eh I think I'll skip the header for now. I can't afford it at the moment. I'm sick of the rice muffler that was welded on by the previous owner though.... I'd better go find some decent prices.
