gravana non autometer tach adapter?
Monday, May 02, 2005 1:46 PM
so i got the cheap tach adapter from gravana (made by carbon by design) and im trying to figure out how to hook it up. i've done some searching and i can only find instructions for hooking up the autometer adapter. can i follow those instructions? the adapter i have has 3 wires: a black, red, and green. i know the green is for the tach but im confused about the others. a wireing diagram came with it but it doesnt seem to be the same way the autometer one hooks up in the other posts i have read.

thanks

i am guessing that green is your accessory, red power, black ground. thats the way it usually is.

New sig in the works

the green one i'm not worried about, just the red and black. i know the autometer adapter has 2 red wires and they connect to the pink wire in one of the harnesses on the coilpacks. i'm just wondering if the adapter i have hooks up the same way - the red and black wires connected to the pink wire.

Red in most cases is always 12volt power and blk is ground. Green is for the tach....

Thats how almost ALL tachs and tach accessories are. Im not sure on which wire to run the green though. I have a sunpro tach adapter with autometer tach but its not hooked up yet and i have no clue on what wire to run it to.

Most likely a signal wire from the ignition module. Not sure on what color (2.2)

dyskord>>>> Have you looked on the nyj-bodies web page for the tach install on the 2200? I didn't even need a tach adaptor. Granted mine is a 2001.

if you are referring to the wire at the pcm, yes, i looked there and couldn't find the wire. and there isn't one in the fuse under the hood either so i have to go through the coil packs.

here is the diagram that came with the adapter. i don't know how to read these things..maybe someone can figure it out.

dyskord>> i took this directly from the ny-j-bodies site under tach install on 98+2200. If you go to the wiring diagram pin out for the ecu. it labes all the pins on the conectors for you. Just tap into that wire and when you calibrate your tach i believe you have to put it on 2 cylinder or 2 cycle i forget which as it has been a while since i put mine in.

FOURTH: Green Wire - TACH Terminal from the PCM

Locate the PCM (Refer to a shop manual for location). There are two slots of connections for the PCM. The upper part (which is BLUE) and the lower part (which is BLACK). Using a wrench, unbolt the lower part (BLACK), making sure not to damage the gasket. Remove the light blue face for easy access to the wires. Locate PIN #10, it is WHITE WIRE. Remove some of the electrical tapes for more access to the wire.
Cut, strip, and connect the white wire to the Green Wire from the TACH. Use a connector butt to properly connect the wires. Tuck neatly all excess wires using wire looms and electrical tape.

Now you're ready to Calibrate your TACH. Follow the instructions that came with the TACH on how to calibrate it.

^^^^^^yeah i tried that, there is no wire at pin #10. maybe that only applies to cars with a factory tach? plus my tach doesn't have a 2 cylinder setting. so it looks like wiring it to the coil packs is the only way.

yeah i checked both plugs. i know somebody else here with a 98 didn't have that wire either so maybe it was something added after 99.
