Cam Swap
Friday, April 15, 2005 7:01 PM
I have a 1995 Cavalier with a 2.3L Quad 4 and I am looking into swapping in some cams from a HO 2.3L motor. Does anyone know if my stock valve springs will work with the new cam which has a higher lift.

In your profile, you put it in as a normal 2door cavy with a 2.2 auto?!?!?!?

If you really have a Z24, put it straight and write the good info.

a 2.2 is not a quad 4
a 2.3 auto can't work with the Ho cams unless you modify the cam for the cam sensor

I just swapped in the 2.3L Quad 4 with a 5-speed manual, I just forgot to update my profile. Anyways will the stock 2.3L valve springs work with the HO cams?

Yes they will but what year is your Quad 4?

I got the Quad 4 from a 95 cavalier, and yeah I planned on getting the cams from mantapart.

you did all that work and bought a 95 engine? WTF?

You took one of those POS. you should have search more before doing the swap. DONT GET THE CAMS FROM MANTAPART. unless you want to wait for a few weeks. they can be found easily in the junk yard. as for the W41 cams, you would need the chip to run them and you'll have to buy them from mantapart or TRS. TRS is way better than manta.

Yeah, I had the 95 engine laying around so I figured I would throw it in. Also, I couldn't find any of the HO cams from any of the yards around here, and I will check out TRS. Thanks.

UWI off Sprinkle had a few HO's, I saw a Beretta last time I was out there.

ouch... the 2.3 from 95 was the worst quad engine ever. IT is a hybrid of the 2.3 and 2.4L with balance shafts and all the crap in it. I also believe it was OBD2, therefore HO cams will not work as MFK said because they do not have the cam sensor pickup on them. There are so many other problems with this motor, I just don't have the time to go into it.

That is all besides the point though, because the point is that it is in the car and you want to know about cams. Ok. Well not much you can do about the intake cam, unless you have an HO cam modified for the cam sensor pickup...which I was quoted $100 to do...Uhhh as for the exhaust cam, you can go with the HO. Only problem is that if you are running OBD2 wiht the 6250 rpm redline, the power band is going to suck. Just when the cams start making good HP numbers, you will be smashing into the rev limiter. If you converted to OBD1, then this is not a problem. In the OBD1 case, there is no cam position sensor, so both HO cams will work. I think I got that all right...someone re-read that and make sure I did not go cross-eyed when I wrote that.

It is confusing.

First of all its OBD 1 so I don't have to worry about the cam sensor. Also, the 95 2.3L isn't great but it is a heck of a lot better than a 2.2 and now I have a manual. As for the balance shafts they added them in 95 to try to calm some of the motor vibrations that earlier year 2.3s had... I know they rob some power but what can I say, my girlfriend likes a smooth ride

I have been talking to mantapart about the swap and they have helped out a ton. I think I am going to wait on the cam swap though because I want to put new valve springs in at the same time and when I do this I will also probably want to do some work on the head.
