I am installing my header this weekend, and getting the exhaust done on Monday. Problem is, the exhaust shop is about 15 miles away from my house (and it is a 20-25 minute trip). If i run the car with no exhaust---just the header and downpipe---is it going to hurt the engine at all? Should I just try to attach it to my current exhaust and let the muffler shop take it off and put the new one on?
thanks
you will be fine with the header and downpipe. just do something so it doesnt just hang there. you want to try to secure the downpipe. i drove 25 miles yesterday with an open header on my car, driving to the exhaust shop.

youll be fine. but you will be very loud

Yeah you may want to get some ear plugs. I installed my header, the downpipe and then welded the resonator to the cat delete pipe my self and installed everything and then tied up the resonator so it wouldnt hang, and man alive it was LOUD AS HELL, you could here me coming from along ways off.
Funny thing was at idle with just the resonator it was actually pretty quiet, but as soon as you hit the gas it was over.
You would only have a chance of hurting the engine if it were really cold out and you can take a chance of the cold air reverting back up the pipe and hitting the hot valves and burning them. But with the downpipe installed no worrys of that.

Im premium since January, but why doesnt it say that?????
i ran mine open header/down pipe (pacesetter header) to the shop few miles away.... LOVED THE SOUND wish it was legal like that... lol, anyway,,, even if you get pulled over, most cops should be understanding.. and let ya on your way...
ok, thanks guys. being able to leave that open like that is really going to save me a lot of hassle, should make it so I can get it installed tomorrow after work.
thanks for the info.
since everyone seems to thinkits fine I'll throw in a warning...
exhaust valves got @!#$ HOT!!!!!! now when you run an open header and you shut the car off there will be cool ambient air that makes its way up the exhaust to the valves.... its not real uncommon to have the valves cool down to fast (especailly in the winter) and kind twist/warp/crack which is a very very very bad thing.
Also to the people that said they loved how it sounded with just the header... I have a an electronic cutout on the end of my header so I can open and close it to run an open header from inside the car anytime I want with a switch... you should hear a full bolt on cams and nitrous eco come screaming by with it open
but, its april 14th today, not really winter. in my state, it was 75 degrees outside. no cold air. anyways, just dont drive like a maniac while its open header, and keep the revs low to keep it quieter.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Its been quite awhile since i've heard that one
The only way those valves are going to get really got is with a solid cam and too tight of a lash causing them not to seat/close all the way while running. Dont worry about valves, Dont worry about it not running, just worry about the sound as fawk it will be LOUD....
cheers have fun!

if you say so, I didn't say it WILL happen, I said its not uncommon, letting people know it CAN happen
^^^ it is true but burnt valves are most commonly caused by a cracked maninfold or blown gasket.

wtf..... um edit button please

1st of all, it doesn't fit, I have mine welded dirrectly to the end of my header and to fit it before thae cat you haveto cut about 5 inches of the back back off to move the cat farther down stream.
2nd of all, a bolt on N/A motor will get no power gain from it, you will lose all low end. With full bolt ons, cams, and nitrous, there was a small but nboticable gain if you opened it slightly not full open.
3rd, I broke mine, my car sits to low and the motor for the valve got slammed off curbs, pulling into the driveway, the wiring for it got ripped out from the car draging its way through the snow, bottomed it out on alot os fhit and of corse when it motor took a @!#$ it was stuck open hahahah
but yeah with all the mods I had and the exhaust opened it up it sounded like the most itmidating 4 cylinder to be driven on the street hahahah especially with the lopey ass deep idle
heres a pic
and its www.quicktimeperformance.com <-- speel check that name and I'm not making it a damn link, copy and paste you lazy bastards
by the way thats the single 2.25 inch cutout with single QTEC valve

sweet pipe
i want to run that after i get the turbo for my car
that cutout setup + turbo = boner
one of my buddies has an insanely built LS1 (forged stroker motor on more nitrous then seems possible) and he runs his stock catback exhaust on the car, kinda for the sleeper effect, keeps it somewhat quite and it looks stock but hes got the electric cutouts on each header. It funny when someone wants to race him then sitting at the line he opens the exhaust to actually let the engine breeth how it should and it sounds like all hell broke loose hahah its awsome
^^^ I hit post to early but what I was getting at is doing that on a turbo cavi would be a good idea, stock looking sleeper with stock exhaust still
just open the exhaust when your gona get on it andit will flow all you need it to
how much are one of theos pipes?
