New exhaust....holy !@#$ is it loud a$$ rice....
Wednesday, April 13, 2005 7:43 AM
Just got my new exhaust in and man is it freakin loud....like a Honda Civic fart tube for sure. What I have is a Pacesetter header, down to flex pipe, cat(Magnaflow Aluminized Steel Universal High-Flow Catalytic Converter 2.50" In/Out, 4"x5-1/8"x9" Body, 13" Total Length) then to magnaflow muffler(Magnaflow Aluminized Steel Muffler, 5x8x14" Oval, w/ 2.5" inlet/outlet) , all with 2 1/2" piping. I know adding a resonator should quiet it some and likely mellow out the high tone to it, but question is, would it be significantly quieter if I installed a resonator? Looks like I have enough room for about an 18"-22" resonator after the O2 sensor to the first bend. Or would it be better to get a quieter muffler? Any suggestions along with how much and where to get it would be greatly appreciated. Just can't deal with how loud it is......please help.....before I go deaf.....

a different muffler could help. probaly change the sound of it as well. also a resonator will help too

I've got pretty much the same exhaust sytem as you, except no header, and mine is 2.25" from the exhaust manifold back. Mine was loud as hell at first, so I went back and had a Magnaflow resonater installed. It knocked the high tones down and took the rasp out of the exhaust. Still a bit loud, but not offensive, never been stopped for loud exhaust.

yup a resonator will help

So, what would be better....install a resonator or get a new muffler? Also, if I install a resonator, approxiamtely how much of the noise will it absorb? 25%, 50%, just a ball park would do. Same goes for a muffler....if I get a new one, which one and how much quieter approximately will it be? Thanks again.

the longer the resonator, the deeper pitch and more buzzing is eliminated. changing the muffler won't do anything for the buzzing.

So a different muffler won't make it any quieter? Question still remains, if I get an 18-22" resonator, how much noise can I expect it to eliminate approximately?

I wonder if it's the flex pipe that's making a lot of the noise?

I have the same set up just with 2.25 piping and I had a lot of buzzing. Put on an 18'' res and no more buzzing and a much more deep mellow tone, but still not quiet quiet, still has some juice in it.

Get a resonator and a Flowmaster 40 series muffler. Bye bye Fartcan sound.

As far as resonators go are their any different varieties of resonatoror are they pretty much all the same, doing the same thing? I had a look around but couldn't find an actual resonator, but could find 4" cylindrical glasspack mufflers. Is that what you guys are talking about? Anyway....maybe I'll just go back to the place that installed it and ask them how much for a resonator and a Flowmaster 40 series installed will cost. @#$% this sucks, I already spent $480 for the install, now it looks like another $150 for the resonator and muffler, what a waste. I wonder why the guys at the muffler shop never said anything to me about how loud it would be. Guess I got no choice now to try and make it quieter though. I just hope it helps it get down to some sort of decent decibel level. All in all I spent like a $1000 including all the parts and labour. I woulda been better off getting a body kit. Oh well, live and learn. BTW Thanks for your suggestions guys, I hope it quiets it down.

if you're looking for quiet.... flowmaster 50 series would be your better bet, paired with a decent resonator of course

Right now with whatever muffler you put on it will still sound like the biggest bee in the world. The only thing that will take it away is a resonator. Don't go spending more money on a new muffler just yet. Get the resonator. The longer it is the quieter.

Do you guys have any recommendations for resonators that would quiet it down the most? A specific manufacturer, product and part# would be great. As far as I know everywhere I've read says to get a glasspack, but what exactly is a glasspack and will it work best to reduce the noise. Thanks.

i went through the same thing you are. personally i think its that damn pacesetter header but i paid the money to put it on so why take it off. You'd be surprised how much that factory stuff keeps the car quiet. I would say get a bigger resonator I had a 18 long one i got a 22" long 4" round one from justmagnaflow.com. went from a 13 inch cat to a 16 inch cat, and from a race series to a street series muffler from magnaflow. and i would advise against the 40 or 50 series they have to much of a "tingy" sound i think when you see the cut outs of them theres just nothing to them in my opinion. Ive had both40 and 50 and hated them. im on my fifth exhaust setup because of how bad they've sound and i can finally tolerate the set up i have now.

If I would have known how loud it was gonna be and how much of a pain in the a$$ to tune, I definately would have used the money somewhere else. Since I'm stuck though, it sounds like a 22" resonator be my best bet for reducing the noise, and by approximately how much can I expect it to reduce it by?

i am a dealer for top speed. a cat back exhaust will run you 170.00 with shiping. and a damn good tone with good hp.you could bolt it on your self

hey where is top speed located?

I added a Magnaflow resonator, basically a straight through glass pack "header" muffler like the cherry bombs. Cost me $120 installed. Try a Magnaflow resonator, the longest one you can fit and change the muffler later if you're not happy with it.

David Lang, can you post a link to your site or something, Where can i get this 170 cat back system? Is it custom? Please....tell me more....sorry for jacking your thread.

So, essentially what I need is the following from justmagnaflow.com to use as the resonator, which is essentially adding another muffler behind the cat.

4" Round Aluminized Muffler, CARS10426 : 18" Body, 2-1/2" C/C w/2.5" Core, Magnaflow universal muffler. Or perhaps the 22" version, I gotta figure out what will fit I guess.

One more question though, even though my whole exhaust is done with 2.5" tubing, would it be better to go with a smaller diameter resonator, say 2 1/4".....would that help to reduce the noise levels too??? Or should I just get the diameter that matches the rest of the exhaust?

why the hell would you spend all of that money, then go stuff a big ol restriction in there by putting a smaller res in? same diameter res get the longest you can fit and slam that in. and for the people that say a muffer wont get rid of the bee sound, wrong-o.... all depends on the muff..

Sorry to hijack the thread, but if you have an 2.25" exhaust piping you would obviously get a resonator with the same size core. But what about the inlet/outlet, wouldn't you want it bigger like a 2.5" so the exhaust pipe can fit in it?
Re: New exhaust....holy !@#$ is it loud a$$ rice..
Wednesday, April 13, 2005 11:58 PM
no, thats why they make exhaust pipe and muffers with 2.25" ID (inner diameter) and 2.25" OD (outter diameter) the slide together
