I have a friend who just got hit and smashed up the rear of his car. He drives a 2004 Dodge Neon SRT. I asked him jokingly if he would sell the engine and tranny. He said he would for $1,000. I just want to know if this would be possible to swap. It would be cheaper then a turbo for my current 2.2 Any ideas?

Wouldn't be worth it. But, you could sell the parts and use some of them and build you a monster turbo engine that wouldn't be impossible. Check Boost Forum...

Anything's possible with money... I've seen a CRX with a blown 502 and another with a Bluebird SR20, so I'm sure this is possible.

I know it is possible. I am wondering if it's worth it. I could go through all that trouble only to be a little faster then other cars. If I can achieve the same with a few bolt ons then I could go that route. It caught my intrest because of how much he sell the engine and tranny for. I figure with another $1,000 I could swap it. I'll keep you guys up to date.

i seriously doubt 1000 dollars would swap that motor and tranny and everything else you need into your car.
Get the complete wiring harness, PCM, axles, front suspension, brakes, steering arms, swaybar, basically the whole front end, then with a welder, and some metal fab skills, it could be not too difficult..

You'll never get 230+ wheel horse power from bolt ons. Turbo or nitrous is the only way. You would have to re-engineer the entire engine bay to get that to fit, since if you notice, the engine bay of the SRT-4, and neons in general, is much deeper than the cavalier, and the SRT-4 engine uses it all...
$1000 for the motor, and probably $3000 to get a shop to put it in, or spend $4000 on a GM 2.4 with internal rebuild and a turbo, and you'll be faster than the SRT-4 and a lot easier to put in and tune.

Easier to tune? Yeah, maybe if your OBD project is finished by then..
Yeah, buy it, sell it to someone with a neon, then buy a LD9 or eco, build it, then turbo it. You will have an easier time with another GM engine without a doubt.

I do a lot of welding and metal fab so that isn't an issue. Just didn't want to put all the time and effort into something that I could achieve with an easier swap. I was also thinking of selling the 2.2 and buying a Z24 and upgrade that. I might be further ahead. Not sure i'll keep everyone updated.

i say that if you live in a shop, go for it. if not then don't. it's an engine that is upgradeable form mopar. the only way that it wouldn't be worth it would be if you were paying labor.

I'd say the SRT-4 engine, once it's in the car and running properly, has a lot more potential for power increases from aftermarket mods, at less cost than any J-Body engine.
or you could just buy a neon?
there's an idea. ^ buy an old 96 or newer base model with the fugly four leaf clover steel wheels. i would never expect one of those turds to pack anything over 120hp.

One of my friend got his 98 neon in the low 12 last year without turbo.

Well the whole idea is now a fantasy. His insurance company totalled it. He said they told him he could not take anything off the car or they wouldn't pay for it. So I am back to square one.
