Just wondering people usually ask for when they take a head in for work. 3 anglie valve job, 5 angle valve job, whats the difference? also i know that you can port the piston area also to a certain size what do you recommend? Please let me know... i just want to get a basic P&P with a valve job anything else that would be good for all n/a or turbo?
Thanks guys
a 3 angle is what your car has now, a 5 angle is able to grab some more air. In the FAQ that is posted at the top, Event said that radius is the best valve job, but not a lot of places do it.
By porting the piston area i think you mean bore it out. I think a good number is to bore it out .2 because that way the cyl walls wont be too thin. I think that is fairly cheap to get done, but you will need some new pistons to fit in there. If you go n/a use a higher compression, if you use a turbo use lower compression so you can use more boost.
You can also look into oversized valves. If you do a port and polish and a valve job, I would suggest buying a head that has this done. The way i see it is that the company that sells it has tested the method they use, so they know it works. If you take it somewhere to get done, the guy probably doesn't know anything about the motor, so it might be better to just buy one.
yea the thing is i received the head from my parents as a christmas gift now im looking for someone to do the work on it... i plan on getting new valves before i take it in for work, the ones from mantapart anygood? and hows there customer service i heard a while back that it was horrible. i just want to know what exactly to ask for so that i dont look like a dumbass when i walk into the place asking for the work to be done... so now i see that i would ask for a 5 angle job and for them to bore the piston area out to a .2 along with the standard port and polish... Also i posted in the regional forum for my area and i have a speed shop that someone tells me does this any way that i can search anywhere for shops that do work on these particular engine heads?
Thanks again
I think you have something mixed up. the .2 over would be the cylinder bore as in the engine block it self would have to be torn apart and they could "bore" the cylinders bigger for you. As where I think you want them to make sure all the combustion chambers have the same size displacement "cc"'s in the head it self. and if you take it someplace to have them port your head. ask them to bench flow your head before and after porting to see what kind of gains were made.
Also dont forget karo over at carcustoms.net has valves as well.
later good luck to you.
well now, i highly doubt your going to bore an engine over .2" you mean .020" and i would mainly reccomend a .030, gives you room to play still and doesnt cost any more while giving you alittle extra cubes.
when taking a head in get some good valves installed, 3angle valvejob (wouldnt bother doing a 5 for a street engine but it dont hurt) get the bowls polished and the ports blended/cleaned up, gasket matched just a basic P&P job. you get past the basics things get expensive real quick. make sure you get them to hot tank and pressure check the head, also check the valve guides, and get the deck machined to make sure its flat for a good gasket seal.
