Got a question about replacing exhaust header
Thursday, April 07, 2005 10:00 PM
i have a 1996 chevy cavalier z24 (with a 2.4L twin-cam of course) and i was just wondering: on that kind of engine, do you have to pull the engine to replace the exhaust header?

i have seen the headers on other cars, like civics, and they are infront and very easy to get to, but it seems on the cavalier it is toward the back bottom, under a heat shield.

is there a way to replace the header from either on top or underneath without pulling the motor?

thanks for whatever help i get!

you do not need to pull the engine to replace the header

do you know if you get the exhaust headers off from above or from below with the car on a lift?

I did mine with a lift, took some bolts out from above some from underneath, I had to move some stuff out of the way (oil stick, and somthing else nothing too major though)to get the exhaust manifold out, we pulled it out through the top and lowered the new header in. It is not too difficult an install just be patient, you probably could do it without a lift just be more work. I had no problems with the o2 sensor reaching the new spot on the header but some do, btw I have a pacesetter 4-1 header.

To fit the top part of my RK sport header i had to unbolt the top and lower engine mounts and supported it with a floor jack then while i pried it forward my father slipped the header into place... but that took about 10 min to do, nothing to hard.
