System too rich? code 0172 WTF!?
Sunday, April 03, 2005 4:18 PM
Here is the mod list, performance wise (I'm leaving off stuff like motor mounts):
Weapon-R intake, Level Zero Motorsports cams, Weapon-R header, 2.5" high flow catalytic converter, RKSport cat back duals, Aztek map sensor, Apex'i S-AFC 2.

I installed the header and cat back exhaust last year and got dynoed. At the dyno, with a wideband sensor, it was obvious my car was running too rich. That and the fact my cat was fried and smelled like crap. To fix it I was told to get a S-AFC.

I installed the cams and the SAFC at the same time (within a week). After a few problems, everything was working happy. Yet... once I had the cams installed I was getting 'system too rich' Code P0172 and P0172pending. I had the car dyno tuned for the SAFC to lean it out. Didn't go away. I just recently put on the 2.5" highflow cat (late last week) and the code is still there. WTF?!

What can I do to make the code go away, or preferrably fix the problem that is making it see the system too rich.

lower your base fuel pressure, get an afpr

just like with boost, your map sensor is seeing a different pressure and adding fuel in, the problem with mine. well was...

get an afpr and lower your base fp to like 38 or so, thats where mine is at and my car wakened up a lot

did anyone clear the code in the car for you? The codes dont disappear
you can either buy a code reader that does it or leave your battery unhooked for an hour

QBE, I wish I could read your post, but your sig is blinding me =( As for the code, I'm no expert, but what Rodimus said is first and foremost... that's very strange that you're still having a problem after having it dyno tuned...

I've got a code reader/clearer. I clear the code and it comes back.

QBE, what brand and where did you get your afpr?

an update...

I tuned down my SAFC to an additional 10% from what it was taking out. Definitely got more power. I did this by taking out 2% at a time. After taking out the additional 10% I ended up with a new code. P0300. Random/Multiple Misfires. I'm guessing I leaned it out too much. But then why did I also have the code p0172 and p0172 pending at the same time? It was too rich AND too lean?

i'll tell you straight up dude the SAFC is causing some problems too. The SAFC is designed for a MAF-based system, not MAP. The SAFC tricks your computer, not adjusts it like a true standalone. Your computer could be ignoring some of the SAFC tuning and compensating and that could be a reason you are running too rich. But I also agree, get yourself an adjustable FPR from Aeromotive.

KC, I was running rich BEFORE the SAFC. Once I installed the cams and safc, it started throwing the too rich code. It was rich before, enough to fry my cat, but not enough to set the code.
