i want to rebuild my 96 2.4 and i want the eagle rods and weisco 20 over piston kits and stuff and i was wondering if any one knew the best place to get them and where they would be the cheepest. and i cant think or anyother bottom end stuff. i am keeping the crank the same and oil pump. is there anything else i am forgetting besides the small things like gaskets and freeze plugs. thanks.

hey, i just blew my motor saturday going down to hwy 100. i was doing about a hundred @ roughly 6000 RPMS when i shot a rod through the bottom of my engine. im not sure exactly whats wrong with it yet, i plan on taking it apart tomorrow and getting a closer look. it still turns over and DOESNT make any noise( clunking or scraping) and stuff like that, but theres a big 5 inch whole in my oil pan and the rod is sticking out of it. ANYWAYZ. i was thinking about doing and getting the same stuff as SEAN MINNIS, but i had a question first. i want to make my motor N/A, but for now i need a way to work and i am sorta looking for the CHEAPEST and QUICKEST fix.
Can you replace pistons and rods through the bottom end of your engine?
I know that normally u put them in through the top, but there is nothing wrong with the top end of my car.....so why take it apart

well to answer both.. you need a machine shop... they need to take your engine apart and bore out the block.. when i got it all priced it was around $2500 for everything.. $3000 with some headwork done.. not cheap to say the least.. however im sure there are places cheaper.. but prolly not by much.. however the machine shop guy did say that i would have one bad ass engine after.. as for stock replacements.. im sure you can do some of it through the bottom end but overall i wouldthink that the engine would have to be pulled to do most of it.. sorry to burst a bubble if i have done so

You cannot put a piston in from the bottom on the 2.4L. It must go in from the top. Also, if you threw a rod through the pan, you have to remove the engine and have it checked. There could be a lot of other damage you dont even know about. That rod, not only broke your pan, but it probably clanked off the crank, and balance shaft assembly and cause some damage. Rods dont just fall out, they fly out with huge force...especially at 6k rpm. Also the cylinder bores could be scored up as well and require a re-bore.

Thanks for the info guys, I just started to take things apart today, as i got under the car i noticed some more MAJOR engine block damage on the rear side of the engine. AND im leaking Tranny fluid now. thats prolly not to good considering i just paid $1200 to have it replaced. Looks like i have to do it AGAIN!!! Oh well, But for now im just unbolting everything to get it ready to pull. Ill keep u guys notified of any other major finds. HA HA HA

Lee scrap that block. You will save more time and money if you swap in a used one.
Make it 5 speed or order a replacement crate. Just some ideas. Its a good time to do exactly what you want. Take the bus for two months.

lee, how much do you want for your motor? and what is in it? compression ratio? who built it?

Well i have everything disconnected from the engine itself. now i just have to wait a few days to get a hoist and then out comes the engine. then i can get a better look at the internals. But just by looking through the hole in my pan. i can see that i have atleast one snapped rod, a sheard crankshaft and a busted block. i plan on getting a new(used) block , Crank shaft(gonna Knife-Edge it to shave a few LBS), pistons(higher compression 11:1), rods, cams, ported and polished head, ported TB and intake manifold, and a full Pacesetter Exhaust System. I plan on making my car totally N/A. Anyother thoughts on what to do to the engine would be greatly appreciated or if im forgeting any important things. But for all those a little more experianced in engines, What would u give as a rough EST. on total HP when all said and done?
