i was wondering how hard or easy it would be to remove the balancer shaft on the crank. i think the 2.3 dosent have one. and i know the 23ho performs a little better then the 2.4 . i'd like to take mine off so the engine can rev better, less weight to turn, dose anyone know where i can get a real cold air intake for the 24, i looked at injen, and aem and they dont make them for the 24. not warm air intake, i want the filter to sit in the fender. thanx

ok not a 100% about this one but i believe in removing these u are gunna have to get new oil passages drilled. Thats what i have heard, but then again i may be wrong.

Since the oil pump is driven by the balance shafts, you'll also have to do a 2.3 oil pump conversion. That means a couple holes need to be drilled into your oil galley and you need to modify the pickup tube to clear the pan. You'll also need to have a drive gear pressed onto the crank.
Just to warn you though, its not gonna free up like 40hp or anything, 10-15 at the very most.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
10-15 is nothing to shake a stick at.
Anyway, it is not a simple process by all means. You have to plug all the oil feed holes in the block to the balance shafts, then drill holes for the oil feed and dowel pins of the 2.3L pump. You will need to sleeve the oil feed hole since the drilling takes you out of the block, then back into the oil gallery. The drive gear has to be put on the crank after the balance shaft chain sprocket is removed, and the oil pan has to be cut and welded to clear the pickup on the 2.3L system.
It is not easy, and not cheap. But if you are into squeezing out every little bit of horsepower, it is worth it.

ok thanx, so it would be easyer to just buy a bretta motor and swap it in, rather then screwing around with the shaft?

it's worth it if you do it yourself. I also think you can justify it if it costs less than $500 for a machine shop to do it. Think about it...minimum, you get 10HP, so at $500 that is $50 per 1HP. People pay $200 for an intake that gives them 3HP which is $67 per HP. Same way with those cat-back exhausts. If you pay $300 and get like 5HP, that is $60 per HP. Anyway, I would not recommend it for the faint of heart, but if you are really into making power, get rid of them.

I got it done. Yeah it frees up a little horsies, I also have like 65psi of oil pressure. you have to plug the 2 oil galleries up, and drill new ones. Then you have to press a slieve in, then you have to fit the 2.3pump and widage tray in. If you are building a kick ass motor, then why wouldnt you do the pump swap?

its done to my block.
biggest pain in the ass i found was the oil pan mods believe it or not.
who modified your pan?
Or do you know how to weld Aluminum yourself?

Yeah he is going to do mine once I get on the ball here. I was just curious to see if you had someone else do it.
