Tonight I found a place here in southern Indiana that these kids race for cash. Got a few ricers and alot of Jbodys and so forth. I went there and raced was doing good till a kid with a 75-76 Datsun 210 walked all over me. This costed me $100.00. I have a Hypertech chip, 2.2 and a 5 speed. Done nothing else to it yet. This is the way I got the car. The people I got this 95 Cavalier from said that the motor is a 97 so is the trans. So now I am looking for more of a way to take this 210 and make it eat my dust. They dont allow any kind of nitrous at these races...nor boost. Give me some ideas where I should go from here and where should I find the parts. I know a cam would be a good thing. Has anyone tried to put in bigger injectors...like out of a V-8...and would it work?
Thanks in advance for any help or feed back.
Injectors are useless without the air to back it up.
You can only go so far without actually going into the motor, cams, high compression pistons, bore and hone, lightened crank, lightened flyhweel. Remove as much of the interior as you can, put your car on a diet. Really though, without going into the engine, I don't think you have a chance.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
hypertech chip? is this an actual chip or a little tuner you plug into your obd II port. cause if its a 97 engine you can't chip it. right?
New sig in the works
correct, you can't "chip" it since it has no chips, it can be reflashed, however i don't know if hypertech has cracked that code. honestly, i'd go for cam's since it doesn't require much engine dissassembly but is quite a bit of work, go to a junkyard and find a set of low milage HO cams. aside from that and the standard array of bolt ons your only other option is internal stuff-valves, springs, pistons, rods.
I figured I was going to have to open up the motor. I dont mind doing that. Just wasnt sure about everything that is computerized. I am old shcool when it comes to cars. I am very used to building carb V-8's. Just now getting into this computer thing. This little car just seemed to be very fast for what it is. I had talked to the previous owner abou it after I had owned it for a few days. I had just went with what they had said. I have owned several of these cars...mostly late 80's models. 3 were 5 speed cars... 2 2.0...and one 2.8. It seems that this one would walk all over the 2.8 Z24 that I had. I ran up against a v-6 Grand am and was able to take him off the line and down the road. So this car has really surprised me. This is why I took it out the the drags last night. This is why I ask about this car what to do to it. Like I said I am just now getting into the whole computerized car thing. I have been working on them but not racing them. So thanks once again for any help.
What kind of carbed v8s have your driven around in to make you think a 2.2 is fast?

he said its a 2.2 which me it has one cam
which means so secret swap sorry
Just start with the basics. Get an intake, exhaust, header, engine mounts. just look around on here and look at some of the sites posted and check them out. A good site to try is
http://www.gravanatuning.com. another is
http://www.carcustoms.net
don't worry about a cam on a 2.2, because it is in the bottom of the motor and can be a task to change unless you pull the engine (i looked into this in my 95 2.2).
if you have any questions about anything, e-mail me.
any motor from 95 on up cant be chipped.

What I am meaning is that for a 2.2 4 cyl it is fast for what it is. It has good pick up off the line...I have had older Cavaliers that wasnt even close to this one. I had two 88's with the 2.0 motors and they werent nothing compared to this one. both of the 88's were 5 speeds. The 2.8 5 speed Z24 wasnt as peppy as this car. I wasnt tring to compare this car to any V-8. I have a 77 El Camino SS with a 454, 400 turbo trans, 4:11 Posi rear end, I have done a cam swap, Intake, and now Nitrous. The little Cavalier wouldnt stand a chace against it.
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/278347 So as far as me driving anything fast V-8's I have drove many. My first car was a 69 Firebird...400 Ram Air 4 speed. And many fast V-8's after that. This Cavalier is something I got just to save on gas and I have seen it has potential for something more. If you also check out my other links on my Cardomain site you will also see the other cars I do have in my stable of V-8 cars. The only car I done have pics of on there is my Vette...which also is a fast car. It's a 75 350 4 speed car. Nothing special....just a Vette.
Ok, first it is street racing right? The why can't you have nitrous or turbo. I'm sure people have those mods there. Sounds like it is a group of ricers (not because of there cars), and they do not want to lose money. If they were really into racing, it would be run what you brung.

96 and up, 95 still has a chip, for the 2.2L AND the 2.3L same computer, just a different chip.
I know this for a fact.
my replacement computer I got for my GT had the 2.2L automatic chip in it (BMZX), car ran fine on this chip, but would throw a CEL I replaced that chip with the proper one when I did my HO swap (BRBP)
Now, I don't know if the reverse is true (2.3L chip in a 2.2L) and will work, but I do know it won't look for the EGR , since the 2.3L didn't have one, and it wont try to open it.

Honestly the racing they are doing is out on a back road that is straight and marked off for a 1/4 mile. No one there has any nitrous or turbo and so forth. You maybe right about them not wanting to lose money. They are just a bunch of farm boys with toys.
Well u have a 2.2, and let me tell you, unless u tear it down build it for something big (turbo is ur best option or lots of n20) then it will be forever slow. These motors do not respond to bolt ons well at all, they are in no way shape of form built to be fast or even for the slightest big "quick". That is why there are 2 motors the 2.4 for fun "quick" speed or 2.3, and the 2.2 as the crap, to get u around and not even enough for highway entering speeds. Personally i dont know how u feel that ur 2.2 is kinda fast or has great potential, because it doesnt. Sure u can mod it and put on bolt ons, lots of people do, but it isnt gonna get u far. You will just notice it as getting louder proably more than anything, and u will never ever ever beat that Datsun. So tear it down for big power adders, or leave it alone, or mod with every bolt on u can, but u wont get much. Oh as for a cam, well good luck finding an aftermarket cam built to increase HP for 2.2, because last time i checked, there are none.

Guys thanks for all the input. I guess my next step is to go out here and find a Cavalier with a 3.1 and a speed behind it and do a swap and build from there. I havent seen any 5 speed 3.1's yet but I know they have to be out there. Someone out here has to have wrecked one and is laying in their backyard waiting for me to find it. If not I'll get a 3.1 (or 3100) out of a later model Grand Prix, Lumina or something and I know where there is a older Z24 with 2.8 5 speed grab the trans from there and the flywheel. Then all I will need is the wiring from a V6 Cavalier. Thanks once again for all the input.

Why a 3.1? Do a 2.4, or a Ecotec swap.

better off swapping in a Ecotec. or a 2.4 at least

I was out in the junkyard today and seen several Z24's out there. One was a 3.1 with a 5 speed. I didnt see any eco's out there or even any 2.4's. If they were there they had been already pulled. There was several Sunfires and Cavaliers without any motors and trans in them. Theres alot of Grand Pixs and Cutlasses that I have had that seems to run pretty good with the 3.1. I know there is also the 3.4 thats DOHC and are pretty quick. I havent seen a 3.4 with a 5 speed yet. I think if I pull the 3.1 out of the Z24 and the trans..(which needs a clutch) I can build something from there. Also grab the spoiler, hood, wireing, gauge package, ground effects and front and rear bumper skins.. I might have what I want. At least I am trying to do something different that i havent done before.

If your doing it to be different, that is good. Ig you just want to be fast, well the 3.1 is not the bnest option. Yes you can make it fast, but you can make anyhting fast with enough money. At the same time from what it sounds like you are racing against, a stock 3.1 with a few bolt ons would probably be just fine as well.
FU Tuning
ditch the 2.2 and get an ecotec or 2.4
if you're actually considering going through the trouble of dropping in a 3.1, might as well go all the way and use a 3400. Same swap, 30 more hp.

that kind of surprises me. and then the races he is talking about, a 2.2 kept beating everyone but one car. what the heck are they racing. I've raced a 2.2 before, and they are slow, and i mean really slow, i've always smoked them, but then again, i do have bolt on's. i just thought it was weird that no one has flamed him.

They are street racing, which anyone can win, slow or not. A 2.2 is not fast compared to the other J motors, but against a lot of civics, and hindas it can hold its own. This is what it sounds like they are doing.

Have to agree with this. My 2.2 will hang with any SOHC Honda with bolt-ons (minus N2O and Turbo). They do make a 2.2 cam that increases power as well. www.jbodyperformance.com makes one and its reasonably priced and boasts a 15WHP increase on the 2.2. For those used to tuning the 2.2, that's quite a bit for the money.
I'll have a sig someday....................
