Is this possible???
Has anyone done this, or known of it being done?
I'm sure it's probably similar to the 3800 swap, it can be done, but with some mods/fabrication...
I came across some Pontiac Aztek stuff the other day and was reading about the 1.8L AWD... and the idea popped in my head to make a single engine AWD J body (I have heard of folks running TWO engines, one up front, one in the back) .. but would it be a simple bolt on, or would it require extensive work?

With enough money I could run a 383 with a RWD conversion in my car,
But I was hoping to hear that it's possible with little to no modifications....
But then the next problem, would be finding performance parts for the swapped engine/transmission....

Not even close. The amount of money you would spend on doing something like this would buy you a whole new AWD factory car. Just think about how to route the axle back for the rear tires, a rear end conversion, independant rear suspension setup, reinforcing the back end for the suspension, etc... Its more than just a transmission.

ummmmm ummmmmmmm just duct tape the cavy body panels to said AWD car. That's what I would do, and save $15-30k in the process, because you are basically building an entire new car from scratch. Where you gonna toss the driveshaft? nuff said.
Probably the best way to do it is to use the AWD platform off an Astro van. Definitely not cheap or worth it in my opinion but that's probably the cheapest way to go

speaking of this subject, just a hypothetical question-
in order for this to work, COULDNT/WOULDNT you...
possibly get an awd system and somehow shorten driveshafts/axles to needed length,
somehow make an adapter for the tranny to work w/ our engine
then get the donor cars ecu so that the awd will work?
i know that there is a TON more involved in that, but wouldnt that be the very basic jist of it?

The biggest things are what I listed, what you listed would be chump change compared to what I said.
First off, the axle needs to be routed from the transmission back to the rear axle. That means you have to cut out a section of your floor board and weld in a tunnel.
Then, you have to convert to the awd rear end, which is usually an IRS system. That means you have to adapt an IRS to work with the rear end, and find a differential that will fit back there and not look like the back of your car is 25" off the ground, because the fuel tank is back there you'll have to get a fuel cell mounted in the trunk because you can't tunnel through that.
There's a lot more, but thats the biggest engineering issue. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm not cutting a significant portion out of my floorboard / unibody anytime soon

WAYYY too much money to put into a pos like a j-body, but it can be done with enough beer, money and time.
easiest thing to do is to take the whole awd system out of something (and by whole, i mean motor, trans, t-case, axles, and driveshaft) and adapt it to your car via custom mounts for teh rear suspension (might as well just take that out of the donor car too) and then customize all your axles & driveshafts to fit.
but, way too much work to just have an awd j-body.
It would be expensive for sure and very time consuming. I might have read it on here but the first thing I thought of was an AWD Pontiac 6000 STE. If you could even find one that was still running - it might be easier to do it to a 2nd gen since those cars came with a similar v6.
anyone here ever tought abou using the 4wd system of a S10. if i was doing something like this i would buy a crashed S10 with a 4.3l and manual tranny. i would take the drivetrain, suspension and frame from the donnor car to make the base system. then modify the cavy floor to get it on the frame (cut the floor where the frame is and then introducing the frame in the car, then redone the floor and adapt the seats). i'm still trying to figure how would it work.

i think the easiest way would be to go with a tube frame chassis. going RWD would be a lot easier, but, as said anything can be done with enough beer, time, steel, money and a tig.
There is a 2nd gen in London Ontario with a 3800sc and AWD. He did the thing entirely in his garage with his dad. He took the tranny, brakes, rear axle and everything from an AWD Pontiac 6000(yes there were AWD 6000's but they are very rare). The one bad thing to this equation is that he had to have a 3 speed auto tranny. But on the plus side he has an AWD 3800 J-body with factory rear disc brakes.
You know, I've got just about everything you would need to stuff a 383 in a j-body, including a 383 stroker sitting in my garage...LOL. I've got a turbo 350 short shaft, a 10 bolt rear end w/ detroit locker, and a drift line (would need shortened).
I also have an arc welder....hmmm
I dont think the frame could handle it. You'd ad some much weight with the AWD system and resistance youd need more engine to get the work done. So by the time you'd finish youd have a 4000 lbs j-body that will move at the same speed and drive like crap because it weighs an bu77 load.

Buying something already done does not do it for me. I feel that doing it yourself will give you much more personal satisfaction, especially if you do something no one else has done.
if you're going to do an AWD j.. and plan on doing the work yourself.. buy an older eclipse AWD and transplant everything.. you'd need a longer driveshaft and rear axle tho.. using a 95 GSX it'd be simpler.. suspension and unibody mods i have no idea about..
