IAT Sensor override
Tuesday, March 22, 2005 5:59 PM
I made a "Variable IAT Sensor Override" for my 2000 Cavalier.

I tested an IAT Sensor and found it changes resistance from about .5k ohms to 11k ohms.

I wanted to leave the IAT Sensor, so I had the option to let the car do what its supposed to, in a sense. But I also wanted to be able to override it, so I could trick the computer into thinking its hotter or colder air.

Heres a schematic of what I did that may help those of you who know electronics:

When the switch is in the position shown in the diagram, it uses the IAT Sensor. When IU check resistence across my potentiometer, I get a 1k ohm to 11k ohm range (note the added 1k ohm resistor).

However, when I flip the switch to use the potentiometer, I get a problem...

When the switch is flipped, and I check resistence across the potentiometer, I get a range of 1k ohms to about 4k ohms.

Im not sure why this happens, I should get my 1k to 11k range (as i do when it is 'disabled') but when I try using it, I get 1k to 4k range, which isnt helping me

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Why do you even want that? Car runs rich stock, making it richer doesn't do you any good.

Cuz I'm bored.

Cuz I can.

And I can make it 'poorer' in traffic, save gas. lol

you can actually ruin your engine by running to "poor" or to Rich for that matter

resistance should be measured with the components issolated. If you want to find the total resistance, measure from the 1k ohm resistor to the potentiometer without and voltage in the circuit. This is not going to give you any horsepower though anyway. It is just going to richen the engine even more. If you wanted to lean it out a little to make some more power, do something more like this:

A good advantage is that the engine is always going to stay slightly leaner in a correlation with the actual air temperature so there is never going ot be an extreme unless you adjust the potentiometer to make it extreme. The bad side is that I doubt you would ever dyno tune this or buy a wideband O2 gauge because based on the fact that you are playing with the AIT sensor for power, you are not trying to spend any money.

I see a problem with your design.

Current will always take the path of least resitance. So by doing what you are showing I am only able to decrease resistence (Simulating hot air, which would give me less fuel, the oposite of what I want).

Correct me if Im wrong, no offense, but I don't think I am.

Or wait... is that what your trying to tell me to do?

If your trying to make "power" by playing with your IAT sensor, its a waste of brain cells.

How bout you try over riding your Knock sensor. Or something else?

WTF would overriding your knock sensor do? Other than allow your engine to blow up when it see's knock?

DUDE forget all that just get an IAT selector from ZZPERFORMANCE.COM
got mine yesterday works wonders some people says stuff like that is crap but today at work i hooked up a scan tool and it does realy work in enriched the fuel trim and retarded timing and i can feel the differnce better throttle responce

You call 14.1-14.5 a/f ratio rich? That's what I got on the wideband during my dyno runs stock..

On a stock NA car, or even slightly modified, 14.1 - 14.7 is EXACTLY where you need to be for best power.

I get 14.6 at idle and when I step on it 13s then 12.7 and almost as it hits redline it might even dip as low as 11s or 10.8

And I have no boost lol, so you mean to tell me that on an NA car your are to get 14.1 at full throttle that doesnt seem right
