I have a 2.4 running 14.1 right now. I was gonna build it and i was reading up how a 2.3 head goes on a 2.4 block and it adds nice power. But I was reading up on 2.3 motor. It said the 2.3 lgo motor puts out 210hp stock and how you can put 2.4 crank to stroke it to 2.5l. then you have a nice head and if possible use a 2.4 im because its muchlighter and would be better on the 2.3 motor. Anyway i wanna go for power so would it be better to build the 2.3 or the 2.4 engine? It sounds like the 2.3motor would be much better and only downfall is the 2.4 has better oil passages and better cooling. But i dont mind. Thanks
yes, the 2.3 motor is a better one to build. it makes more power bone stock than the 2.4 does with mods. unless you are an engine guru and know what you are doing, i wouldnt reccomend trying to make a hybrid (2.3 head on a 2.4 block) or a stroker quad 4 motor. it will take some custom parts and alot of tuning to get it right, and you can easily spend that money on the normal bolt ons for a 2.3 and have a very strong motor.

doesnt matnapart sell hybrid 2.5L engines?
Yes they do. For $3,000. With a supercharger. Pushing like 300 hp. Stuntin hella hard. I f you are going to spend all of that money and build the same with no boost, then you would be better off just buying that.
na i dont have problem with building it im a technician and im in school to get ase certified and i understand how motor works but i just dont know all facts rly with the motors like i didnt know at first till u could put 2.4 crank in 2.3 head. Thanks for info guys.

Um. No, the HO motor puts out 180HP, and the W41 puts out 190HP.
The LO is like 150HP or something like that.
No 210HP stock.

Bilmar 2.3 engine = 215hp
That's just a dream you can have since there's no more for sale.

2.3 Ho
what year and model cars usually have the w41 motor? Id like to find a car and motor together and go from there.
mantapart might have a few left. the old olds had them, i think the calais and international stickered cars. good luck finding a w41. HO's are much more plentiful. i think the only differences between W and HO are buterfly cut pistons and the exhaust cam.
both cams are different. They have the same lift as the HO, but they have 218 degrees of duration instead of 212.

the duration makes big difference.
Mantapart don't have any Bilmar engine left. W41's came in some 91 442 and in the 92-93 Achieva Scx. Good luck finding one tough.
mot much more than 3000 have been build and the half of it are gone already.

2.3 Ho
damn that sucks. Im not to famailar with the 2.3 motors but how can you tell difference from the w41 ho, and lo? I beleive the ho says ho right on idi cover. If I cant find a w41 should I build a HO over a 2.4? Also could someone tell me 8th digit engine code? thanks guys.
'A' is the HO 8th digit engine code.
'D' is the LO

here is a little information.
OldsFAQ from www.442.com wrote:W-41
1991:
Again, W-41 was used as a Cutlass Calais Quad 442 option.
It was produced during the 1991 model year. 200 cars (mostly Achieva) were made mostly for racing.
Engine: Quad4 H.O. 2.3 liter, 4 cyl, 190 bhp (Vin A? - LGO)
Transmission: Getrag 5-speed, 3.94 final drive ratio, limited slip
Body Style: 2 Door FWD coupe (Calais, Achieva)
Distignuishing characteristics: Silver striping (4- ¼" stripes)around car, trunklid spoiler, ~30 MPG Highway. Very few options were availible since made for SCCA racing.
Notes:
Olds test results: 0-60 in 6.8 sec, ¼ mile in 14.6 sec (95.7 mph speed at trap).
EPA 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway.
Differences between 180 hp VIN A and the 190 hp VIN A include: hotter cam profile, lower restriction exhaust, and taller transmission gearing.
Won 6 out of 9 IMSA Firestone Firehawk races in 1991.
The most distinguishing feature is the W-41 emblem on the moulding on both the driver's and passenger's front rocker panel. The other exclusive feature is the bright red, with silver stripes, W-41 cover over the engine (plugs, cams, etc.). The words on the cover say "Made exclusively for Oldsmobile". In the center is an Olds rocket next to a "W30" marking.

1992, 93:
The Achieva SCX was made in 1992 and 1993. It was made by Olds to legalize it for racing. SCCA world champ, NHRA record holder, IMSA Firehawk champ. Great car. 1146 made in 1992, 500 made in 1993.
Special parts included: 190hp Q4 (185hp in 1993), which included the W41 cams, larger exhaust system, a Getrag licensed 5-speed with a .81 5th gear, a concentric slave clutch, a modified version of the FX3 Computer Command Ride package, a larger front stabilizer bar, 2 rear stabilzer bars, a wider rear axle, V-rated 14" tires, a 140 mph speedometer, and a 7000k tach.
This car also came in a C41 version, of which only 11 were made. (The standard version is the C60 version, not to be confused with the option package W41, which both had).
This car included a tank baffle, a Torsen LSD, a oil cooler, no power options or A/C, and a 7400k redline. This car was availible to the public, but was built to be sold to the racers as basis for track cars.
The standard Achieva is pretty unremarkable, but talk to any owner of an SCX, and you'll find a happy car owner. 0-60 in 7.6, 135mph, 31mpg, .86 g's, 15k new, and really cheap to insure. Besides, every time you beat someone, you get to talk about your car, 'cause no one knows what it is!

I i had some extra cash id love to buy your motor lol. Whats it goin for anyways?
Well if ur looking to build a motor then it all depends on what u want to do really. The HO and LO engines were designed to perform as n/a motors. So if ur looking to build one for boost then that stock hp mean much. And sense the 2.4 motor has better cooling, and more oil passages, it could show to be a more efficient motor in a high stress application. Plus if ur really looking to build the motor, u can bore it out and u have that tiny little bit more of displacement, although it's probably so small it would be hard to tell a difference. The 2.3 HO's does have some things going for them, like the cams, non-use of balancers shafts, but all of that can be impliments on a 2.4. The choice is yours. That is what im doing.
