Engine Mounts - what do they do?
Thursday, March 17, 2005 11:13 AM
I am thinking about getting the upper and lower engine mounts from RKSport for my 03 Cav.

What exactly do these accomplish? Will I notice a performance change?

I am more of a design guy - just getting started on the performance aspect.

Please explain in layman's terms. I know my way around an engine but I am not an official gearhead yet.

Thanks for any help!

First, don't buy them from RK, get them here:

Free shipping and cheaper than RK.

Next, engine mounts keep the engine from moving in the engine bay. The stock mounts are very squishy to reduce vibrations. By putting in new mounts you will notice more vibrations, but on the other hand, your engine will feel stronger. The energy that was wasted in those squishy stock mounts gets transferred to the wheels, and some even say that throttle response improves.

They are a great mod, I still need to pick up a set for my 2000, but they were great in my 98.

engine mounts are about as easy as they come when you're talking about theory

think of when you rev your engine, it rocks back and forth

the more the engine moves, the more power is lost to the drivetrain which means less is getting to the ground

motor mounts will keep your engine from rocking, but a lot of the engine noise will then be transferred to the cab of the car, along with some vibrations. some people can't stand the noise or the vibes, doesn't bother me that much.... just turn up the radio .

they also help alot when you look into upgrading exhaust, cause if your engine rolls your exhaust (downpipe, manifold, etc) takes alot of abuse.

OK, thanks for the info.

I now understand exactly what they do, but I'm not sure I'm willing to sacrifice comfort in the passenger compartment.

I wish I could feel the difference and judge for myself it it's too much additional noise/vibration.

I'll file this one under "maybe" for now.

Thanks again,

Steve

yeah the vibes aren't that bad at all.... you hardly notice on the highway

throttle responce is inceased.. slightly.... haven't had any wheel hop issues yet... but squaking 3rd is dang easy.

its a great mod to start... i'll also recoment some strut tower bars.. front and rear.... nice improvement for handling

good, and you know exactly why people bish and moan about the mounts.... they're the ones that DON'T want to sacrifice comfort for performance....

I highly recommend the mounts. Seems to have added more low end for me.

Find someone in your area with mounts installed that can give you a quick ride... I used to do that for people that couldn't decide if they wanted to lower their car or not... there's nothing like first hand experience to help you make up your mind

Upon saying that, anyone with motor mounts installed in Steve's area that would be able to give him a ride?

At idle my vibes are very noticeable. (I have an auto tranny.) Other than that the only time I notice them is at idle. They don't bother me tho.

If your worried about vibrations and noise. Just get the upper mount. Stiffens up the engine mount but doesn't transfer much of the annoying stuff.

Well I noticed a big difference when I installed the upper and lower engine mounts and the front and rear tranny mounts...I mean the car feels older with them I think BUT on the other hand they are worth the money....I do not notice the vibes really they dont bug me unless someone else (my girlfriend) points out that the vibes are horrible but there livable!!!

My girlfriend loves the vibes.... especially when i first start the car. She's been bugging me to get the exhaust done too, but then again she's into this stuff and she's buying a Hummer

i just put both mounts in today, wasn't too bad of an install. doesn't take very long with 2 people, i'm sure there are directions floating around in the forum somewhere. i only notice the vibes at idle and when i turn the heat on.. it's not that bad at all. def. worth the money.

not to hijack the thread, but where did you get your strut bar from? I've been looking and can't find one for an 03 cavy.
