underdrive pulleys

Is there really any big differance in buying a top dollar pulley, or buying one on ebay? I ask this question because it is like buying a top dollar wai or one on ebay. They all work the same. So has any one bought one ( pulley) off ebay and how do you like, and any problems with it fitting on right? I got to replace my water pump next sat. so i thought i should get one and put it on while i'am there.

Actually I was wondering the same thing. I'm leary about the ebay pulleys because they may not be balanced properly and could cause something to spin incorrectly. Someone on here may be able to help us out.

I know I had emailed a guy a few years back about one he installed on his car and he could stop saying how great it was. I was never sure whether I should believe him or not though, because I thought he may be the one trying to sell them...

Old Post on this Topic

They didn't really answer the question as to whether it's any good or not, but maybe some have bought it since then?

I was wondering the same myself. I want to do some good mods to me ecotec and I think this will be one that won't hurt my warrenty? Anythoughts on that issue? Also how much is it for a good pully set and is it a hard thing to install??

I have one on my Z. I had a 2.3 underdrive pulley but decided to switch. It weights much less. It was tight fitting but works just fine.

A friend of mine put an e-bay pully (crank) on his subaru, he had it on there for a couple of months, yesterday he just took it off because it ate like 3 belts and made alot of noise in the rain.

I have the RK Sport underdrive pulley on my ECOTEC and it did make a difference in acceleration. It's noticable. I couldn't give you any numbers or anything but it's worth the money for the gains. Go get it.

From the sounds of it, this pulley needed to be properly balanced. This is probably my biggest fear with buying one off of ebay. There is no doubt that they are copying the RK one and in appearance, I'm sure anyone would have a hard time picking from the two. Without it being properly balanced though I could see it causing a lot of problems. The crank pulley must be able to spin VERY quickly and any imbalances would cause issues in my opinion.

I'm still on the fence with this one, so anyone else with some experiences with this?

And how does it compare with your 2.3 underdrive pulley that you had? Did you notice anything at all like quicker revs or better performance? I noticed you have a crap load of stuff done to your car so you might not have noticed anything with this.

Jason,

And performance wise, did you notice any difference?

Just a dumb question: do you need a manual to use an underdrive pulley? My spider sense says "no, you moron, shut up" but I just want to be sure

Either go with Rsm's witch is the lightest ones or go with Unorthodox even though I doubt that there's much wrong with RKsport's either I'm just not their biggest fan.

I made some post about it. I have pictures of the stock, 2.3 and the ebay I bought. I really did not notice much, but the pulley is much leighter than stock and the 2.3 one.

I ran one for over a year, but took it off. They can cause alternator problems, and the fact that it's not balanced worries me. A lot of people have the opinion that the potential problems aren't worth the gains you get. One of these days I will probably throw it back on, just to see how big a difference it makes with the new mods.

One more little thing I remember is that my car didn't like it when I used AC for the first few times after I installed the pulley. It caused a weird noise, but eventually went away. I can't remember if I unplugged the battery or not when I did the mod (over 2 years ago).

The pulley has nothing do with your transmission. If you want you can check my profile, I have it installed.

Just to clear things up, the crank pully does not balance the engine on the 2.2 or the ld9 not sure about the Eco though. They do however act as a noise dampner to quiet things down a bit. The ld9 is internally balanced with shafts and I believe the 2.2/2200 are internally balanced with weights on the crank and rods.

The stock pulley has a harmonic balancer, and no aftermarket pulley has one. The 2.3 HO pulley is harmonically balanced, but is not much lighter. Apparently nobody has ever had aproblem with the lack of harmonic balancer though (according to the allmighty RDQLUS, anyways )

This thread almost has me convinced to put my underdrive back on....

Yeah, although the stock pulley is not a harmonic balancer for the entire engine, it is balanced to reduce the chances of noise and the posibility of tearing the belt. From this conversation, I am now thinking of trying one of the pulleys off of ebay. It's too bad no one has done an actual before and after dyno with this pulley because I would be very interested in seeing those. I believe Unorthodox claims a gain of about 7 HP and I don't know if anyone has ever even tested those or not.

Well, the decision continues but I am now leaning towards buying one.
