LD9 External MSD/External Coil Conversion
Saturday, February 19, 2005 11:31 AM
Found this in one of my folders when I was getting rid of some crap on my computer.. I put it tiogether when I did my engine swapand wanted to keep my 2.2 coils... Hope this is useful to some one....

Where it says Pigtail.. You cut the stock pigtail that plugs into your ICM and wire the 3 Msd wires to it....

A GM schematic for the 2.2 and 2.4 will take any confusion out of this conversion. Had it for 2 years and have NEVER regreted it. Makes things a lil easier..

Nevermind the red wire in this Pic.... was in the middle of a lil wiring project.. lol

That schematic looks about right... it's really not a tough wiring job.

I'm sure plenty of people will appreciate that diagram.

Will this work the same with the programmable version of the MSD 2?

The programable should wire up the same to the best of my knowledge...

Will this diagram be the same for the msd coils? After we do this, is there a way to cover the head? It just doesn't look right with out a cover. Maybe we could put the empty IDI cover back on, but I think that it is a little heavy for a cover.

Looks nice.. but... something is different... I made one my self... a diagram like how you did it..... I will try to get mine on the computer so I can show you how mine is different... may work the same as yours but I am unsure... either way.. looks good... give me a few days and I will get mine up.......

BTW I have a programmable one my self... but that should not differ any.....

Does anyone have more info on this? I have the programable MSD DIS2.

This is what I have under my hood.
Cost for the conversion, less than 150 bucks.
More powerful ignition than the stock setup and something that you can do while keeping all of the factory wiring in case you need to reconvert back to the original IDI setup.
Full writeup is coming and almost complete with schematics using parts from the junkard.
Not stealing anyones thunder hear but thought up the idea a couple of months ago, did the research reading schematics, OBDII parameters, getting the parts, fabricating it all and then putting it all together.
Then did I see there were others with similar systems but using the MSD setup which I doubt would help with anymore spark than I'm getting now.
If I remember correctly, you should know Dom, Fastfire22 and think I've seen you're engine in a printout I had in my paperwork from about 2 or three years ago.
Ironic this is posted after I had to think this out on my own.
I love my setup and brings looks when at the track.

Btw, the heatsink is for the factory ECU that resides under the IDI cover. I've still got to get a bracket to replace the cheesy bracket I'm now using but this is still the prototype and works great.

That's the first picture not shown.

Do you guys think that i could do the same thing for my ecotec? I am guessing you have to buy the coil and the module for them to sit on or do you somhow use the factory ign. module

Are there any detailed instructions on how to do this with the msd system? Can I get a list of parts and where they come from? I have been thinking about this swap for a long time trying to get rid of my stock setup. The damn coils keep going out on me. Thanks for any info.

It can be done for the ecotec engine, using the stock ECU to trigger the DIS coil assembly.
I used the factory DIS coil assembly from a 2.2 OHV engine, gutted the ECU and hardwired in such a way to use the factory plugs (5 pin and 2 pin) on the DIS assembly off of the 2.2 OHV setup. That was the hardest part to fabricate and wire and to make look like the factory unit.
From there it's just a matter of knowing what your trigger wires are from the Ecotec ECU, wiring according to the wiring of the new DIS assembly and putting it all together.
I'll have a full write up sometime next week.
Some fabrication and schematic, wiring reading will be necessary for it to come together.
Works great.

Again, didn't mean to take over the thread, just proud of the work I've done, especially when it was conceived as an aesthetic mod instead of a performance mod.

there is not a ECU under the idi cover. Not sure what you meant by that. This is not the first time this has ever been posted. People have been doing this for years. I do not like it myself. think the stock ignition works fine. How fast is your car?

Maybe I should have been more specific, the ICU, not ecu and sorry about that, gets kind of crazy with all of the acronyms.
The Ignition control module is under the IDI cover with the 9 pin connection that hooks up to it from the PCM.
In spite of the fact that this has been done, I never knew about it and on doing this, guessed it had been done previously but wasn't sure. I pretty much did everything on my own, with no help from someone elses setup or knowledge of it.
Also, I'm not sure if they used the whole DIS assembly of the 2.2OHV setup or not since mine has been rewired and is a complete assembly as it is off of the 2.2OHV engine. To me, that mattered most for the aesthetic appeal and factory look.
I could've hardwired the DIS coils but would've had to find a way to mount them so this seemed most appropriate.
Doesn't really matter, I like it, for me was original, was something that for my area was not known, and yes it has more spark than the stock setup with the DIS coils under the IDI cover. Track times haven't proved this as my downpipe is keeping me from realizing the full potential of the mod. I'll be running low 15's once it's taken care of and am in no hurry.
I've always hated that cover and every time I changed the plugs, realized what a beautiful engine the 2.4 is and thought it ashamed to have covered it.
Btw John, I run a 15.65 at the track a couple of days ago with good 2.2's for 60 foot time.
Again, this will improve once the downpipe is redone and get the 2.5 mandrel exhaust I want. If times don't improve, I'm selling the car for sure.

i have noticed searching thru the registries that some have wired the msd directly into their 2.4 w/o using the spark wires or coils.

is either method more beneficial than the other??

You need coils, some just use the factory ones. If you use the factory coils for the 2.4, there is no need for spark plug wires.

Factory coils suck in the 2.4, that's why I did the conversion and am very happy with the results.
GM compromised with the IDI cover and the coils they used and if ppl would see that, would understand completely.
Too bad I couldn't dyno the car with a before and after run because I pretty much guarantee a 10-15 hp or more increase in the car. Too bad my downpipe (restrictor plate extraordinaire) is so restrictive to really see the benefits at the track.
Although I was running 15.6's with ease, I usually run 15.7's and 15.8's at the temps and humidity with the IDI setup. All this will be remedied soon enough and will show everyone that the factory GM IDI cover coils suck big blue ones.

Write-up on the conversion is almost through and will post soon.
Whether anyone tries this to see for themselves is up to them. It's their loss for not doing so and for only 125 bucks total expenditure, is not a loss of funds for the gains made.

This is a super old thread, but the closest I could find... lol, I had a dyno session with some other local Boosted J's and my car has a really bad miss and falls on it's face around 4400+ rpm... I wanna do a coil setup, any brand is fine, I just need more spark. the guy who runs the dyno said that GM coil packs are really strong...

Exactly what do I have to do to hook up some coils... I am very willing to run plug wires, but wanna stay away from the DIS-2 if possible... any links to carsustoms, ebay, etc, would be great I gotta buy something soon, thanks

its something I've wanted to do for a while Garrett, same with Ian. We started talking about this at work today, as I scrolled down I said ,'hey, I know that guy who brought this thread back from nowhere'

If you want stock GM then use coils from a 2.2/2200, if you want aftermarket look at MSD blaster coils. Sorry to hear the dyno didn't work out for you after all that work, and even sorrier that I had to take off as you got there.
