So I went out today, and got a quote on a custom bent 2 1/4" exhaust with Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. The guy at the shop quoted me $500 (canadian). That price is all in, muffler, pipes, hangers, labor, etc. Does it sound like I'm getting screwed, or is this a good price?
btw, it's all aluminized pipe, with crush bends. Not the type of bends that leave ripples, but the type that shrinks pipe diameter a little. No one in town does mandrel bends, so that's out.
I may not know much about cars, but I know two things....
1) Breaking things is expensive, and
2) Horsepower isn't cheap.
I'm not exactly sure how much $500 Canadian is, but I took my $110 OBX muffler I got from eBay to Meineke and the guy fabbed up a 2.5" cat-back and attached the muffler to it for $90 (including labor). So I got a cat back done for $200 total. That was 3 years ago, though, so I don't know what it would cost now.
Rob
Sold 2/2/05
It doesn't sound too bad. I would offer then a cash deal, do it with the wad of cash in your hand. When I got my exhaust done, I was quoted $375 for the job. I pulled out my money and asked what it really cost to do the job, and he said he could do it for $150.
Keep in mind I had the mufflers and a bit of the pipe needed, all they did was make the pipe I didn't have, and put it all together.

"Custom Bent".... what does that mean? Is he going to bend it like a straw, or whoop-ass and mandrel-bend it... or something in between (google your exhaust bends). If he's going to bend it like a straw in your soda, $500 sounds high.

man 500 is so over priced, i already had a muffler but to have my 2 1/4 cat back its cost me 160$
if i were you i would shop around, if u lived here i could recommend a couple places.

Umm, did you read what he posted or just quote it. He said, crushed, not rippled. And clearly stated that no one in his town does mandrel-bends.
Hope that clears things up for ya.

Yes officer I knew the speed limit was 50
dude...if your in canada....such as myself... there should be a canadian tire near by....heck, THEY HAVE FREE SHIPPING. That muffler well be surprisingly cheap from them. 500 bucks, being 400 bucks canadien, is a rip-off by far. Heck, you could order up a custom cat-back for that price.
Drive to the nearest big city and have a mandrel bent for heck of alot cheaper.
dont goto that shop and get ripped off...
i bet midas would do it cheaper...
Okay, thanks for the info all. I think I'll do a little more shopping around. I thought it sounded pretty high, but I just wanted some input.
