the secret cam swap

ok i read all about it and im doing it but im curious if you guys buy new ones from gm or go to a junkyard or something because im not gonna do all this work to have cams go bad but i usually dont see em go bad in a quad. I may just get new ones. Let me know what you guys did.

Just get used ones, cams don't go bad per say, and I've never seen one that had excessive wear. If you are really paranoid you can have them checked for balance before you put them in.

I don't believe GM has the cams anymore. I think you can order aftermarket ones from Autozone or some other auto parts chain store though.

you can still get new cams but personally i dont think the gains are worth the cost of new cams. go for junk yard cams. or if you really are more comfortable with new cams go for the jbp cams. <br>

Because of the chances of matching up the correct exhaust cam I say buy it new from autozone for $113, and get your intake cam used. I did that, and know someone else that did as well. <br>

good thing you did that so now you can be sure you got the 2.3L cams with the lesser of the 2 lifts .345 as opposed to the .375 desired by the swap, what brand are they? I did a little research and found that the cams from sealed power cs 832, melling mc 832, and clevite 2291942 all have the same specs of .345 lift at 200 so compare that to the stock .345 at 187 and throw in the fact you probably reused the lifters so the cam is going to wear fast you payed good money and spent good time to in the end loose performance. since they are replacement cams ment for stock applications they used a good middle of the road grind to cover all the 2.3L vin D motors. <br>

I used the Melling MC832 from autozone. Did I loose power? Nope. <br>

so buy exhaust cam new from autozone and get used intake cam huh? I just had problems with aftermarket parts.

^ Hey John just curious did u find a significant difference at idle with these cams in? Reason I ask is because I have and I am just trying to determine if its them or if I have a vacuum leak somewhere. Thanks.

BTW just to back up John yes its the MC832 Exhaust cam. Cost me 113 bucks at autozone <br>

well this sucks I just finished putting my cams in and i have a sealed power cs-832 exhaust cam, do you thing i did anything to my new lifters yet i have only turned it over three times by hand??

My idle is prety normal, you can here a small lope in the exhaust. Is yours a auto? If so it will affect them more. The auto's idle sooo much lower. <br>

Someone have sold many 5 or 6 pairs of Secret Swap Cams in Ebay. The more expensive price for that stuff was $130 aprox., if I remember well.

Calling about gettin my cams tomorrow...Just to make sure I got my info right...Intake cam comes from a 1995 Quad 4 (Z24, SFGT, Achieva, Grand Am) and the Exhaust cam from a 1990-1994 2.3L Quad 4 (Grand Am, Achieva, Calais....also has to be the L.O. engine...has a D in the VIN correct?).

Just want to make sure I've got my info correct. <br>

tell them you're looking for more lift and more duration. you can leave everything else the same, just talk to the guy that is going to regrind it and see what he reccomends. <br>

I used the Melling MC832 from autozone. Did I loose power? Nope.


did you reuse your lifters? if so give it a while for the lifters to really wear into the cam, also the duration increase will help, but with the mc-832 you wont see the extra lift but it is only .03 (1/32 ) difference <br>

My Melling MC-832 cam checks .375 lift ... The first one I ordered from Autozone checked .410 .

you guys had me worried because i got the melling mc 832 which was given to use from the Big secret cams post that came out. Definately a gain in power. <br>

hmmm, I'd be curious to see if they all measure that, by saying the first one you ordered was .410 I'm curious.

I plan on doing a before and after dyno of the cams...but it will be with the supercharger...might give an idea of how they'd help a N/A car. <br>
