i have replaced this icm in this car 4 times. the problem is the car is only running on two cylinders. change out the icm works great. 2 weeks later goes bad. change again couple days later goes bad. so on and so on. what the hell could be causing this? this is my girls car she needs it to take our soon to and from the babysitter. i really need some input on what to do about this. its driving me crazy. thanks
yea..i replace the icm on these things alll the times...how many miles you got? ive thought maybe it was an electrical problem or perhaps bad plugs
there is 125000 miles on it
could it be the plugs? i thought that as well but how would plugs make the icm go out?
from what ben told me is that there is more then usual heat around the icm making it go bad. Maybe her fan is going out or needs some coolant. IDK but thats what he said,
ill see if it is the fan going out ill check her coolient to. this just really sucks. i called gm and they did not know what to do. they said they have never heard of this before. and 3 of them said that lol. but ill try to figure it out. i just dont have any more icm's got to go back to that junkyard monday
can you post a pic of how the engine bay looks on it. whats the year oh the car and finally wear are you getting the ICM from?
i will have to take a pic when i get home but the car is a 2002 ls sport ecotec. i have been getting the ICM from a junk yard. i got 4 of them from one junk yard. and now all 4 are not working. but when i get home ill take some pictures to show you the engine.
you said your car has 125k have you changed the plugs? as the plugs get older the gap in them gets larger..and as it gets larger it requires more energy for the spark to jump the gap..and i think this is causing a strain on the coils and icm..although i thought this would cause coils to go out first but its a simple thing to try that you need to do at that milage anyway...if heat is the issue you need to start thinking about insulation .. the icm uses that little cover over the plugs as a "heatsink" and maybe you have bad contact or its just plain getting to hot...but then again heat is a profuct of it pushing out too much power..so start with changing your plugs
good deal, i changed them about 25,000 miles ago but ill change them again any way. i will check the sparkplug gap as well. i was searching and somebody said that you should check the ground wires. make sure everything is grounded right. so ill check all this out tonight. i've got to fix this fast my girl is kicking me in the head about it lol. so she gets to drive my car till hers is fixed lol. which i dont mind our son needs a good dependable car. but if you guys have anymore suggestions please let me know. thanks again
well i was thinking she has those spark plugs that have the 4 arms. hell i dont know the proper word for that. but you know what the split fires look like, hers are that but with 4. you think that could be drawing to much energy to blow her icm? sure hope so that would make it easy
OUCH....throse those out !! ac delco ..platinum if you can afford it..but only delco...slip those in and see how she does
yea also maybe think about getting those spark plug inserts. Remember the more resistance you have the hotter the electric current will be. also you have an 02 so the air flow over the top of the engine is lower in the front. The reason I ask about the picture is to see how dirty the engine bay is. Dirt just acts as an insulator on everything it touches. So check that out and what scott says about the spark plugs.
cool guys thanks ill still post that pic up later. ill do all that.
icm = ignition control module..its bolted to the top of the ecotec engine
are there two wires not connected cause it looks that way unless there are only 3 wires going to the icm its red/white/empty/empty/black ?
positive/ground/?/?/negative
yeah thats it i guess. its to damn cold to go outside right now lol.
I would check that connector for good power and ground.
