Possible road course track weekend/car show
Wednesday, July 04, 2007 12:46 AM
I am looking to put together a J-body and D-body track weekend/ car show much like the lone-star J-bash only at a dedicated road course and over a weekend. I am just testing the waters to see how much interest there is in this type of event and what J-body owners would be willing to pay for this event.

I want to set it up over a weekend with races of classes designated by generation and modification level as well as an open class race open to all street legal participants with a cash prize to top off the weekend. I also want to incorporate practice "lapping" sessions where the track will be open to all participants.

Along with this, I want to have a car show with classes specifically for J-bodies and D-bodies as well as classes open to all makes and models.

Would anyone be interested in participating in an event of this sort? And, if so, what would you be willing to pay to participate in this event?

For a weekend, it would probably be about $150 to cover the cost of the track and supplies. The more interest that I get in this, the less the individual cost is going to be. To rent a track for an entire weekend, which is what I would want to do to get the most track time for everyone, It's going to be a few grand. Then there is the pay for the corner workers and renting the tracks recovery equipment.

I am talking to several different road courses to see what we could work out. It will be a lot easier if I get a lot of interest, because then I would be able to get sponsors for the event. This would cut the individual cost even more.

I want to set it up where there are constantly cars on the track all weekend and have the car show and events for those of us that are waiting for out track time. This is going to take a while to set up. But, when this does happen it is going to be flawless and just an overall AWESOME weekend.

Spread the word about it and refer as many people as you can to this thread that would be interested in going to this event. This will let me know approximately how many people to tell the track/sponsors are going to be coming.

I was wanting to do a smaller regional event in late 2007/early 2008 first to help raise funds to put on a national event in late 2008. Possible venues for the regional event so far are Mercedes Benz of Sugarland raceway in southeastern Texas and also Texas World speedway in central Texas.

From the looks of it the racing will have to be set up in a time-attack or autocross style format unless we do a two day racing school on Friday and Saturday with the races on Sunday. The tracks require a competition level license to compete with multiple cars on the track at once.

This is also because of insurance regulations, insurance is cost prohibitive to have multiple cars on the track at once and would cause the entry fee to be too much for the average j-body owner to afford. This would defeat the purpose of having a j-body meet, to get everyone together for a cool event without excluding anyone.

If you have any other venues that you would like me to consider feel free to speak up. Also, I am currently talking to a few friends of mine at GM to try to convince them to sponsor the national event. If anyone has any contacts at other companies that would be willing to sponsor the regional event, by all means SPEAK UP!
