my gf has a 98 sunfire w the 2.4L motor in it......ok here goes......... we have had the car for about three years, the first year she blew the motor, so i put in a rebuilt motor. i had no problems for about 6 mos. then when we drove the car for a long distance (1000+miles) it over heated on me, i figured ok something broke so i took it to the local mechanic, so i didnt have to try to diagnose the problem my self. he said nothing was wrong with the car he let it run for hours and drove it a few times during the day. So we get the car back from him and it overheats the next day on her way to work, so i just started going through the list of things that it could be. now a year later i have replaced almost everything,
1. thermostat (twice)
2.thermostat housing
3.all hoses
4.water pump
5.radiator and fan
6. overflow tank(nothing to do with it but just to show how much i replaced)
i had a mechanic put a pressure tester on it and it came up ok (no it wasnt leaking and doesnt now but maybe it could help find something) then we had an exhaust gas test done (i dont know what that is but we had it done) we have gone to 4 or 5 different mechanics and asked the opnion of almost every one that i know that is car orentated
HELP ME PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I CANT TAKE MUCH MORE!!!!!!
p.s. any thing you think might help will be taken to consideration ideas anyone
thanks

sorry ladys i was in a hurry wont happen again...........
Hey don't take it to the local mechanic. take it to a GM dealership. Have a certified tech look at it cause the 2.4L engine is very difficult and not everybody knows how to work on it. Take it from me, My Sunfire gave me a lot of crap before I even decided on putting the Body Kit in it. And an alternator, belts, water pump, coils, timing belt, starter, catalitic converter, muffler, I was on my way to put it in the shop to get my project started. Trust me It's going to give you hell but at least to me the 2.4L is well worth it. Anybody else will tell you to get rid of it and get you a real car but if yall like it just take it to a dealership and have them inspect it. To dignose any problem in it they'll charge you from $50-70 but at least you'll know for a fact what's wrong with the car.
Now if the car overheats in a way that you have to stop for it to cool down, take it to the dealership.
But if the temp. needle is always high and it wasn't before then that's totally normal the 2.4L engine does that. you might think it's overheating but it's not unless the needle crosses the yellow mark.
But when I was working for Chevrolet I saw that all the time. Customers would take their cavaliers/sunfires to get checked because of the temperature but there was nothing they could do since that's just the way they are.
>Hope this info. helps you out but if you decide to sell it instead hey just put a price on it and pictures and one of us will take it off your hands

Is there water in the oil? head gasket...white smoke at all?
Clogged water jacket maybe...
radiator cap checked? That is usually the issue.
a mechanic that just lets it sit and run is not going to resolve the issue. As the engine runs under load the pump and the heat create pressure. letting it sit and run does not create load. And this pressure has to be released as it reaches a certain pressure...say at least 14-16psi. if it surpasses this the engine cannot cool down. You could also have a steam pocket that needs to be released or bled. Just some ideas to look for. Also another thing. The heads must be torqued down properly. This can cause warping if the engine gets hot. Once the engine overheats once. it will never be the same. The engine will overheat frequently.
One more thing, the fan sensor. these vehicles use a pull fan on the engine side of the radiator. It only clicks on when the engine reaches a certain temp. Usually around 195-200 degs. Check to make sure the fan comes on when the engine gets to operating temperature.
