96 cavy 2.4 twin cam idle problem!!!!!!
Sunday, January 01, 2006 1:31 PM
hi i have been trying to get this car to idle for me and blah!!! it won't unless its cold and even then it shakes back and forth... I have replaced both o2 sensors(upstream and downstream) cause the code scanner said they werent heating up! I replaced the coolant temp sensor and the spark plugs and boots.. When i had it scanned it threw multiple codes! Then it said fuel system too lean , then it said fuel pressure too rich! wtf? OK, so then i try to change my fuel filter and damnit its rusted on and im afraid of breaking the lines or the bolt off. Any ideas??? The car runs somewhat fine til it warms up then it wants to shake and idle from 1000 to 500 then almost zero or die , so i have to drive with 2 feet...annoying on an automatic!!! I tried a few things while running i unplugged the IAC to see if it would respond well, it started running worse so i plugged it back in and it ran again like it was. I cleaned the IAC and where it bolts into, nothing helped. I unplugged the MAF OR MAP SENSOR w/e and it kicked the cooling fan on...so i dunno about that one. I dont know what else to do besides change the fuel filter. and look for another engine. The car was wrecked and odom reads 140k but not actual so i dont know actual mileage. I also unplugged the TPS on the TB and it ran worse so i plugged it back in and it ran like it was again...
HELP PLEASE!!!!!!! THROW IDEAS AT ME!! THANKS, PROJECT CAVY

1996 Chevy Cavalier Z24
2.4 Liter Twin Cam 4 cylinder
Auto Trans.
2 Dr. Coupe
140k(not actual)

sounded like low oil at the beginning but with all those codes i'd say try the fuel filter... get a big thing of pb blaster and soak the crap outa it the nut will come off but the "quick disconnects" are bitches in my opinion to get off... i'd say change your fuel filter see if you can get a vaccuum gauge on there see what it reads then do a compression test on all the cylinders... post that and go form there

Well if your not idling correctly, the most possible cause would be either a dirty or faulty IAC sensor. You could also have a fualty TCC that would cause those kind idling problems. Just I don't see either of these sensors throwing codes like what you have.
I know for the tcc sensor you can unplug it for a 2nd gen to see if the problem stops, but I don't know if you can for a 3rd gen.
If the car was hit on the front pass. section during that wreck..i'd also check out the state of the pcm

sounds weird as hell but if you haven't cleaned your throttle body out i know that that can also send your iac into a frenzy and make it stall out clean the little area around the throttle plate to make sure sufficient amounts of air are getting by there... but yeah hit us up with compression tests, iac electicity, plug of the iac, the length of the iac plunger, and if the engine is tossing any codes.... later
