ABS light comes on, car won't starting
Thursday, December 29, 2005 2:35 AM
Hi,

My wife has a 1998 Sunfire SE (2.2L0) 66,000 miles on it. Sunday night her ABS light came on, and then the car would not start again. We jumped it, and it started, and continued to start about 5 more times, and than yesterday, the ABS light came on again. Turned off the car, turned it on again, started, 20 minutes later, turned it off, turned it on, and it wouldn't start, I did not try to jump start it again though.

A similiar problem happened about 1 1/2 years ago, and we had the replace the alternator. I would be suprised if that is broken so soon, but.... Any suggestions?

Try disconnecting the battery for about 15 mins. Then try after you reconnect it..

This belongs in the maintence forum though, maybe they can help ya a little more
Good luck

Can someone move this to the maintenance forum, or do I have to repost?

that happened to my fiances 99 sunfire SE... on hers, it was an aftermarket alarm that the previous owner had installed. she couldnt use the alarm because she never got the remote or anything for it, so it was never armed. but somehow it armed itself one day and she couldnt start her car, ABS light was on too for some reason. we just had to find all the wires to the alarm and pull them.

oh, by the way. is it trying to kick over at all? or does it just laugh at you and do nothing? with hers, the ABS light would strobe, and all electrical stuff would just shutoff. so the motor wouldnt even try to kick over.

It makes a strange noise & some clicking I think(sorry, I'm at work and can't remember exactly what the noises were) but doesn't try to turn over.

I have had this happen on a '93 2.2.

The main wire from the alternator to the battery had a broken crimped connector (At the alternator, under the rubber boot, so not visible ).

This resulted in no charge to the battery BUT the charge warning light circuit was still OK so the charge/alt warning light was out.

The ABS light seems to be the first to come ON and give any clue that there is a fault with low battery voltage.

I charged the battery, crimped on a new connector, reconnected the battery and it has been fine for years.

If it's not an alarm fault could be a similar problem and it doesn't take long to check

Hope this helps

Two conditions may be causing that (I already had the same problem with a '98 2.2L Cav)

a) There is a problem with the alternator. Do you have blown 40 A fuse?
b) You have a blown starter switch. It cost $55 +/- You will need TORX 3 or 4 FEMALE wrench to change this. Also, look for a Service Bulletin

I'd check the battery voltage and cca's, I've never had a faulty battery on my 3rd gen(knock on wood)..but most newer vehicle shut down when it detects the battery is dead, it does this to save the alt.
If it was me and I had this problem, I'd being checking this first to make sure I'm getting the proper power needed.
I know around here Wal-mart has a scanner to check alt. charging voltage/amp, and a tester for batteries as well. It wouldn't hurt to get your car over to one of these places to do a alt./battery test
Good Luck
